Application Information & Requirements

All students who require a visa to study in the United States, or who are already in the United States on a visa, must complete IU Southeast's international application for admission.  Applications are filed alphabetically under the family name you list on the application form. All of your forms, records and correspondence must use the same name and spelling.

How to Apply for Admissions

Undergraduate Students

  1. Complete the International Admission Application. This application can be completed on-screen and then printed to be mailed. Or you can apply online.
    (You must have the Acrobat reader to view this file).
  2. Submit a non-refundable, US $30 application fee.
  3. Provide official academic records for all secondary and post-secondary work. If the official language is not English, provide an official, exact (literal) English translation as well.
  4. Provide SAT or ACT exam results (if you completed secondary school less than two years ago).
  5. Submit proof of English proficiency (see English Proficiency link below). 
  6. Provide financial documentation.

For graduate programs, contact the individual department in order to learn about program requirements and receive an application. The following graduate programs are available at IU Southeast.

English Proficiency

All students who require a visa to be in the US are required to demonstrate English proficiency.

IU Southeast accepts the following as proof of English proficiency:

  • Graduation from a U.S. high school
  • Graduation from a secondary school in which English was the primary language of instruction
  • A C or above in a college-level English class from a U.S. college or university
  • The equivalent of a C or above in a college-level English class from a college or university in which English was the primary language of instruction
  • A score of 530 or higher on the paper version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • A score of 197 or higher on the computer-based TOEFL
  • A score of 75 or higher in the internet-based TOEFL
  • A score of 6 or better on the IELTS 
  • A score of 85 or better on the Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency (administered at IU Southeast)
  • Successful completion of the Intensive English Program at the Center for English Language Training at IU in Bloomington, Indiana
  • Successful completion of the English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Jefferson Community College in Louisville, Kentucky
  • Successful completion of the Intensive English Program at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky
  • Successful completion of Level 112 at ELS Language Centers http://www.els.edu/

Financial Documentation

U.S. immigration regulations require international students to show that they have enough funds to pay for educational and living expenses for a 12-month period. Proof of financial support can be an official letter or statement of account(s) from your bank. If you receive financial support from another individual, they must provide a financial statement showing adequate funds. If you receive funding from a corporate or government sponsor, the sponsor must supply a letter of financial support. Your full name should be included in any letter of financial support.
