General Commencement Information
Commencement 2008 for Indiana University Southeast will be on Monday, May 5, beginning at 6:00 p.m. It will be a monumental event for you, your family and friends, as it will officially end this phase of your academic experience and open a new world of opportunity. There are a lot of important details you must know about Commencement 2008, however, and we would like you to take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the following information.
Time and Location
|
Time and Location: Commencement will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. at the Ogle Center Amphitheater, located adjacent to the parking lot on the north side of Knobview (KV) Hall. Admission tickets are not required.
The morning of Commencement, the Chancellor will determine if we have to move to the rain site. The rain site for 2008 Commencement is the IU Southeast Gymnasium. If we move Commencment into the Gymnasium, to accommodate graduates and their guests, there will be two Commencement ceremonies: 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
3:00 p.m. - Commencement will be for the following schools: Arts & Letters, Continuing Studies, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences
6:00 p.m. - Commencement will be for the following schools: Business, Education, Nursing
To attend Commencement at the rain site, admission tickets are required. Tickets will be distributed when you pick up your cap and gown.
Academic Procession Assembly: Assemble at 5:00 p.m. on Alumni Drive -- the road that is between the parking lot and the Campus Service Building (see attached map). Please arrive wearing your graduation cap and gown, and be ready to line up behind your Academic School/Division's banner.
Name Cards: You will receive a name card once you are assembled with your fellow graduates. During the actual Commencement Ceremony, the name card reader will ask for your name card -- so your name can be announced to the assembly as you pass to greet the University Officials. So, this name card is very important.
The academic procession to the commencement ceremony seating area will begin promptly at 5:45 p.m.

Caps and Gowns: All graduates and degree candidates attending Commencement must wear caps and gowns. Cap and Gowns can be ordered at the IU Southeast Bookstore or at http://www.herff-jones.com/college. Gowns must be turned into the Herff Jones represenative on campus the day of Commencement.
Robing: As previously stated, you are encouraged to arrive wearing your graduation cap and gown-- prior to lining up for the Commencement on Alumni Drive.
Tassels: Bachelor degree candidates should wear their tassels on the "right side of their caps" (until their degree has been conferred), while Master degree candidates should wear their tassels on the "left side of their cap."
Cords: IU Southeast recognizes outstanding academic performance by awarding degree recipients with three levels of distinction: (1) Highest Distinction -- Red and White cords, (2) High Distinction -- White cords, and (3) Distinction -- Red cords. Cords are worn in a set of two, around your neck. (Example - High Distinction two white cords).
Students who have received honors are entitled to wear cords during the Commencement Ceremony. This year, graduates in an IU Southeast honor society, that is active and in good standing, (http://campuslife.ius.edu/involvement/) are eligible to wear cords representing their society. Again, cords are to be worn in a set of two around the next. It is up to each honor society to choose to participate. If a society chooses to participate, it is the responsiblity of the society or the graduate to purchase cords. Since cords are now allowed to be worn, please do not wear additional medals or pins.
Cords will be distributed at the Honors Convocation at the Ogle Center in Stem Concert Hall on Sunday, May 4, 2008, at 3:00 p.m. If you believe that you are entitled to wear cords and have not been contacted two weeks prior to Commencement by your division office, contact your school/division office. For questions regarding the ceremony itself, please contact the Registrar's Office at (812) 941-2240 or at registrar@ius.edu

Ceremony
|
Academic Procession: The Academic processional to the commencement site will begin promptly at 5:45 p.m. You, as a graduate, will march behind your School/ Division banner to the "graduate seating area." When you are ushered into your seat by the Commencement Marshal, you should remain standing until the faculty and the platform party have assembled on the stage. Once everyone is assembled on the stage, the National Anthem will be sung and the invocation delivered. The President of Indiana University will then direct the remainder of the Commencement Ceremony from the stage.
An interpreter will be present -- on the right side of the stage -- for the hearing impaired.
Degree Conferral and Individual Recognition: After the degrees have been conferred, you will be directed by Commencement Marshals to proceed by rows to the distribution area, where you will receive your red diploma case/cover. You will then be directed to the platform. At that point, please hand your name card to the Commencement Reader who will announce your name to the assembly. Then proceed across the platform to receive congratulations from the IU Trustees, IU President Michael McRobbie and IU Southeast Chancellor Sandra R. Patterson-Randles.
Recessional: The platform party and IU Southeast faculty will take part in a recessional. Graduates are expected to remain in their seats until after the platform party and the IU Southeast faculty have exited the Commencement Ceremony area. Then graduates will be directed, row by row, to leave the Ceremony area.
