The 2008 Grenadier baseball team will look to build upon the foundations built in 2007. This season’s squad returns eight KIAC All-Conference awards, seven starting position players, and all but three pitchers from 2007.

PITCHERS
KIAC All-Conference honorees Brad Nickles (7-4, 4.22) and Adam Lipke (5-0, 3.56) will lead the way for the Grenadiers on the mound. Seniors Eric Eickholtz and Deavon Wiseman add to the experience on the mound. Also returning for the Grenadiers are juniors Alex Sedam and Shane Zoeller, sophomores Derek Decker, Kris Eschman, and Chancey May. Newcomers looking to make an immediate impact are Billy Murphy (Jr., South Suburban College), Brent Bennett (So., Ancilla College), Alex Brewer (So., Univ. of Indianapolis), Kyle Miller (So.), true freshmen Daniel Allison (Doss H.S.), Chris Brady (Charlestown H.S.), Adam Burton (Franklin H.S.), Todd Harbin (New Washington H.S.), and Joel Hensley (Jennings County H.S.).

OUTFIELD
The Grenadiers return four players who saw extended playing time in the outfield last season in Ryan Jones (Jr., .277-0-16), Jeremy Boehnlein ( Jr., .257-0-9), Kris Eschman (So., .310-0-15) and Casey Crawley (So., .279-0-6). Eschman was an All-Conference selection a season ago and Crawley could see most of his time on the infield this season. Sophomore Jacob Mathers, who appeared in 32 games in 2007, will be competing for playing time in center field. Adding depth and competition to the outfield mix are newcomers Kyle Lenn (Jr., Vincennes University), Ben Wyatt (Jr., Cleveland State (TN) College), Brandon Clemmons (So.), and Shane Scroggin (RS-Fr., Morehead State University). Kevin Foley also returns to the Grenadier roster after sitting out the 2007 season.

INFIELD
Seniors Beau Manning (.358-4-33), Brandon Hogan (.363-3-43), and Mark Abell (.355-4-46) will solidify the infield and lineup for the Grenadiers. Junior Drew Locascio appears to be the fourth starting infielder, with Crawley and fellow sophomores Austin Teague and Dustin Goodlett providing solid depth. Newcomers Andrew Davis (So., Georgetown College), Jordan Pass (RS-Fr., Marshall University), and Daniel McDonald (Fr., Waggener H.S.) will make their presence known and push for quality playing time.

CATCHERS
Second team All-Conference honoree Kellen Rollins (.341-0-24) returns behind the plate. Sophomore Van Fowler will also return to action this season after red-shirting for the 2007 campaign. Transfers Baird Hall (Jr., Volunteer State College) and Randy Koch (Jr., Spoon River College) help provide a solid catching core for IU Southeast.

THE SCHEDULE
The 2008 schedule includes two NCAA Division I opponents, the University of Evansville and IPFW. The Grenadiers’ KIAC conference schedule is comprised of a four-game series against each conference opponent. IU Southeast will travel to Alice Lloyd College and Brescia University, then play host Asbury College and Berea College during this year’s conference play. NAIA non-conference opponents include four preseason top-25 teams: Tennessee Wesleyan (No. 10), Union (Ky.) College (No. 19), Southern Polytechnic (No. 22), and Campbellsville University (No. 24). IU Southeast Head Coach Josh Schultz commented, “The schedule is extremely challenging but will push our squad to reach their full potential. The quality and depth of our regular season opponents will better prepare us for a potential post-season appearance.”
