Josh Schultz enters his second season at the helm
of the IU Southeast program.
The 2007 season was highlighted by victories over
eventual Region XII Champion Union (Ky.) College and Region XI Champion
Cumberland (Tenn.) University. The
Grenadiers had nine KIAC All-Conference selections and equaled their longest
winning streak (6) since 2003. Two
Grenadiers were named KIAC Pitcher of the Week and four received KIAC Player of
the Week honors, including one Region XII Player of the Week. In the classroom, the Grenadiers doubled the
number of KIAC Academic All-Conference honorees and increased their team
GPA.
Prior to IU Southeast, Schultz served two seasons
as an assistant at University of the Cumberlands. The Patriots won 79 games in his two seasons,
including a Region XI Runner-Up finish in 2005 and Mid-South Conference
Championship in 2006. While at the
Cumberlands, Schultz was responsible for outfielders and assisted with hitting
instruction. Five Patriot outfielders
were named All Mid-South Conference under Schultz’s tutelage. In 2006, the Patriot offense finished in the
top-5 nationally in triples per game (2nd, 0.473), batting average (4th,
0.362), doubles per game (4th, 2.509), runs scored per game (5th, 8.691), and

Three Cumberlands position players were also named NAIA All-American

Mountain Collegiate Baseball League from 2005-2007. In 2005, he served as assistant coach for the
inaugural season of the team and league.
In 2006 and 2007, he returned as the team’s head coach. His squad’s increased their win totals and
improved their winning percentage in each season as head coach.
Prior to Cumberlands, he served for six successful
seasons as a high school assistant coach. Schultz was assistant coach at
Campbell County High School in 2004, and Pendleton County High School from 1999
thru 2003. Schultz helped lead his teams
to district titles in 2000, 2002, and 2004. In his only season at Campbell County,
the team posted an eight game improvement from the previous season. In 2003, he
was on the coaching staff for the East All-Star team in the KHSBCA East-West
All-Star game.
Schultz also coached in summer leagues while in the
high school ranks leading teams to the finals of the league tournament and to a
USSSA World Series appearance in 2003 and 2004.
Two of Schultz’s former players were selected in
the 2007 MLB First Year Player Draft.
Nathan Jones, who played for Schultz at Pendleton County High School,
was a 5th round pick of the Chicago White Sox out of Northern Kentucky
University, and Travis Mortimore, who played for Schultz with the Cheyenne
Grizzlies, was a 21st round pick of the Seattle Mariners out of Wayne State
(Neb.) College.
