Head Coach: Yancey Walters –
Coach Walters grew up in Southern
Indiana in the West Baden and French Lick
area. He trained in tennis at the French Lick Springs Resort and Spa Tennis
Center. He played tennis,
basketball, and ran cross-country in high school at Springs Valley
High School. He also played
in junior tennis tournaments throughout the Southern
Indiana area during high school.
During college, he taught tennis on
the weekends at the French Lick Springs Resort and Spa Tennis Center, and also helped coach their club
team. He also won the intramural tennis championship at University of Southern Indiana
in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles for multiple years during his college
years. He was named Men’s Intramural Athlete of the Year at University of Southern Indiana in 2002. He was
co-captain of a men’s team and a coed team that participated in all
intramural sports and won the campus championships from 2000, 2001, and 2002. He
graduated in May of 2002 from USI with a B.S. in Physical Education (emphasis
teaching) and a minor in Health / Safety.
Coach Walters took a position to
teach middle school PE and coach 7th and 8th Boys
Basketball in Madisonville,
Kentucky. Then in 2004, he took a
K-8th grade PE / Health teaching position at Anchorage
Independent School
in Louisville
where he also coaches 8th Grade Boys Basketball and Intramural
Basketball / Soccer, and became Assistant Coach of the IUS Men’s Tennis
Team. Since moving to Louisville,
Coach Walters has been a teaching pro in the summers at Plainview Swim and
Tennis Club.
In January of 2006, Coach Walters
was named Head Men’s Tennis Coach at IU Southeast. That spring was a
rebuilding year and the team finished second in the conference, and had several
team members named to the KIAC All-Conference Team. In the summer of 2006 Coach
Walters was Director of the Junior Tennis Program at the Plainview Swim and
Tennis Club, and also Head Coach of the Plainview Club Tennis Team.
The 2006-2007 season marks Coach Walters first full season
as head coach IU Southeast. The team won the 2007 KIAC Regular Season and 2007 KIAC
Conference Championships. They had five team members named to the
All-Conference Team, and Bob Briscoe #2 singles and doubles was named
Men’s Conference Player of the Year. Also, they upset the College of Virginia Intermont in the NAIA Regional before being
beaten in the regional final by Union
College, a team in the
top 25 in the NAIA national rankings.
