Michael Abernethy is a Lecturer of Communication who joined the full-time faculty in 2002. As an adjunct faculty member, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001 and was a three time recipient of the Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. His interests include Debate and Argumentation, Oral Interpretation, and Political Rhetoric. He has taught thirteen different courses at IU Southeast. In his free time, he writes a regular column for an online magazine.

Rebecca Carlton, Lecturer of Communication Studies, joined the faculty in 2001. She teaches courses in public speaking, advanced public speaking, interpersonal communication, group communication, first-year seminar. She earned an M.A. in Speech Communication in 1992 from Ball State University and a B.A. in Speech Communication in 1990 from IU Southeast. Prior to joining the IU Southeast faculty full-time, Ms. Carlton was an Instructor of Communication at Sullivan University for eight years and taught part-time at IU Southeast and Ivy Tech State College. She represents the faculty on the Orientation Committee, Improvement of Learning Committee, and Arts and Sciences Committee. She is also involved with the Center for Mentoring.

Assistant Professor of Communication Studies
Audrey L. Deterding is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies. She holds a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University in Communication Arts and Sciences. She teaches classes in interpersonal communication. Dr. Deterding's research interests include family communication, focusing specifically on siblings during young adulthood and the processes of sibling groups and conversational analysis of adults and children during language acquisition.

James Kauffman, a Professor of Communication Studies and director of the University’s Institute for Learning and Teaching Excellence, joined the faculty in 1988. He earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University. He teaches courses in rhetorical theory and criticism, public communication, and public relations. His research interests include crisis communications, NASA public relations, and the rhetoric of staffed space exploration. He serves on the editorial board of Public Relations Review. Married over 20 years, he has two teenage sons and is an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Louisville, Kentucky.

Granville King, III is an Associate Professor of Organizational Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Speech Communication. Dr. King's research interests include organizational whistle blowing, peer disclosure, and crisis management. His publications may be found in various referred journals including Communication Research, The Journal of Business Communication, Journal of Business Ethics, and Health Communication.

Vijay Krishna is a Professor of Advertising. He earned his Ph.D. from Ohio University. He teaches persuasion, advertising Strategy, Electronic Media Advertising and Public Communication Campaigns. Currently, his research interest focuses on several projects that focus on "international advertising" and "the impact of the Internet advertising in developing countries." Dr. Krishna also a consultant for national and International businesses in the areas of Online Branding; Marketing Research and Integrated Marketing Communication Strategy and Audit. He received the FACET (Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching) award in 2001 and Teaching Excellence and Research Award in 1997 and 1998. Dr. Krishna is the Editor of The Kentucky Journal of Communication.

Jason "J. R." Ramsey joined the IU Southeast Communication Studies faculty this year. He received his B.A. in 1999 from IU Southeast, where he was voted "Outstanding Communication Student," and graduated with his M.A. in Speech Communication from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2001. While at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he served as Assistant Course Director of Public Speaking. He has co-authored papers presented at the annual conventions of the International Communication Association and the National Communication Association. His area of research interest is communication in the health field.

Diane Reid is a Senior Lecturer of Communication. She earned her M.A. from Western Kentucky University in Communication with an emphasis in oral interpretation of literature. She teaches courses in public speaking, interpersonal communication, oral interpretation of literature, voice and diction, and interviewing. Her recent teaching awards include: Metroversity Outstanding Faculty for Adults Award (1996), Teaching Excellence Recognition Award (1997, ’98, ‘99’ 2000), Most Accessible Professor Award from ACCESS (1997), and the Trustees Teaching Award (2002). Diane has been a member of the Communication Studies faculty since 1981 and is currently the Coordinator of Basic Courses in Speech. Diane also conducts workshops for local businesses in the areas of interpersonal relations and public presentations.
