- What is Communication?
- Communication is the act of conveying a message. Communication Studies examines the numerous methods humans use to convey messages.
- What is the difference between Communications and Communication Studies?
- Commmunications courses focus on telecommunications: radio, television, and film primarily. IU Southeast does not have a telecommunications program. Communication Studies courses focus on the ways in which humans communicate with one another.
- What are the prerequisites for a Communication Studies degree?
- To enter the Communication Studies program, a student must have completed S121 (Public Speaking), S122 (Interpersonal Communications), and W131 (Composition) with a grade of C or better. Additionally, a student should have an overall GPA of 2.3.
- What can I expect to learn in Communication Studies?
- Students in Communication Studies learn about communication skills in a variety of areas: rhetoric, groups and organizations, interpersonal relationships, argumentation, persuasion, and communication theory. Instruction in other areas will vary based on the electives a student chooses. All courses are designed to help students have a stronger grasp of the communication process, while enhancing their own communication skills.
- What kinds of job opportunities are there with a Communication Studies degree?
- Because strong communication skills are one of the most sought-after skills by employers, graduates have a multitude of job opportunities open to them. IU Southeast students with Communication Studies degrees have found work in law, business, the ministry, teaching, public relations, advertising, the health field, journalism, theater, and social work, among many other fields. - How do I apply to become a Communication Studies major?
- An applicant must first notify his or her current advisor of that s/he plans to major in Communication Studies. Once his or her file has been transferred to the Department, the student will be assigned an advisor in Communication Studies. Students should meet with this advisor as soon as possible.
- What are the minimum credits that I must meet for graduation with a degree in Communication Studies?
- Requirements for graduation will vary depending on when a student began attending IU Southeast. Graduation checklists can be found by clicking the Advising Information link. Regardless of the degree plan under which a student falls, an overall GPA of 2.3 and the completion of all communication courses with a grade of C or higher is required for graduation.
- What is the job placement after graduation for Communication Studies majors?
- Job placement will vary depending on a student's post-graduation goals. Establishing a career will understandably be easier in same fields than others. The key to finding a good job is to make yourself a desirable employee while a student - good grades and strong letters of recommendation from your instructors will open many doors as you enter the professional world.
- How many math courses are required for Communication Studies majors?
- Students must complete MATH M118 or a higher math course.
- What are the average class sizes in Communication Studies classes?
- Class sizes will vary, but all Communication Studies courses have a "cap" of 25 students or less, allowing for more personal instruction and attention.
- Are there any elective classes that can enhance my Communication Studies degree?
- The department offers a variety of elective courses covering a range of topics from gender and communication to public relations to political rhetoric. This allows a student to gain more in-depth knowledge in areas of communication which interest her or him.
