Academic Programs and Degrees
Education programs offered by Indiana University Southeast are approved by the Indiana Division of Educator Licensing and Development (recently the Indiana Professional Standards Board) and the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE). These programs may meet licensing requirements of other states, including Kentucky, through cooperative and reciprocal agreements. Questions about licensing requirements in specific states should be directed to the school licensing advisors in the Student Services Office (812/941.2386).
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: If you are seeking classroom accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act, you are required to register with the Disability Services Office. The office is located in the Academic Success Center, UCS 207; 812/941.2243. To receive academic accommodations for a class, please obtain the proper forms from Disability Services and meet with the instructor at the beginning of the semester.
KENTUCKY EDUCATORS--ATTENTION!!! Educators licensed in Kentuckyneed official transcripts for license renewal and/or rank change applications. BE AWARE that official IUS transcripts are not available immediately after coursework is completed. Transcripts with grades are usually available about one week after the end of each term (Fall, Spring, Summer 1, and Summer 2). (While Summer Intensive 2 courses are finished in late July, grades will not be posted until mid-August.) Degrees are awarded three times a year: 5/31, 8/31, and 12/31; degrees are posted to official transcripts on or about 15 days later. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that renewal coursework and license applications are completed in a timely manner, allowing time for obtaining necessary official transcripts.

Secondary Education in American schools traditionally includes grades 7-12, the junior high and senior high school levels. An increasing number of school districts now include middle schools with grades 5 and 6. The typical secondary school includes instruction taught by disciplinary specialists in science, mathematics, English, social studies and other subject areas. School days are normally broken up into blocks or periods and students move from class to class. The typical school year varies but is approximately 180 days.
Most modern secondary schools strive to meet the needs of all of their students by stressing basic skills, health, social interactions, vocational aptitudes, cultural understanding, citizenship, and moral development, as well as transmission of knowledge. The common thread that strengthens all secondary education is development of students' ability to think independently and act responsibly as they prepare for adulthood.
CANDIDATES for KENTUCKY LICENSURE: Please be aware that KY does not currently grant a license to teach chemistry or physics based on Secondary Education's Physical Science major. Kentucky also does not grant a license based on teaching minors.
