Admissions Requirements

In order to apply for admission to the Elementary Educational Psychology block (Block 1), you must attend an application orientation session. These sessions are held at various times during the beginning of each semester. Please contact the Academic Success Center at 1-812-941-2243 for information regarding specific times and locations of the application meetings. Applications are only available through the Academic Success Center.

To be considered for admission, all applicants must meet the following basic criteria:

  • Completion of the following courses:
    • ENG-W 131, Elementary Composition (or transfer equivalent), with a grade of C or better.
    • EDUC-F 200, Examining Self As Teacher (or transfer equivalent), with a grade of C or better.
    • SPCH-S 121, Public Speaking (or transfer equivalent), with a grade of C or better.
    • MATH-T 101, Math for Elementary Teachers I (or transfer equivalent), with a grade of C or better.
  • Successful completion of one course from the Social Studies Content Block (see Elementary Education Undergraduate Program Check Sheet).

Applications without the PRAXIS I scores will not be reviewed.  Candidates who do not pass all three (3) sections of the PPST may have acceptance into the full Elementary Education Program delayed.  Admissions are based on rankings determined by the review criteria--a maximum of 50 candidates will be accepted. Four of the 50 admission positions are reserved for candidates who plan to obtain special education certification; these applications must be approved by Elementary Education and Special Education Faculty.

Review and Notification Process

Applications will be reviewed by the Elementary Education Admission Committee according to the review criteria below. After the Elementary Education Admission Committee deliberates, an applicant will receive a letter indicating his/her admission status for the upcoming semester. The information cannot be given out over the phone.

Review Criteria

All applicants who have met the basic admission criteria at the time of application will have their applications reviewed and ranked according to the scale below. The admissions GPA will be calculated by the Elementary Education Program Admission Committee on 18 credit hours using the grades in F 200, ENG-W 131, SPCH-S 121, MATH-T 101, the Social Studies content course and the Science content course. If applicants have more than one Social Studies content course and/or Science content course completed, then the course with the higher grade will be used to calculate the admissions GPA.

Transfer candidates who have completed F 200 (or a transfer equivalent) at another postsecondary institution must have the instructor of the course complete  the Indiana University Southeast an "F 200 instructor evaluation form", and forward it to the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program. If the transfer candidate is unable to contact the instructor of the F 200 course (or its equivalent), then the transfer candidate may have the instructor of another completed education course (that has an elementary school field experience) complete the F 200 instructor evaluation form, as long as prior approval is obtained from the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program at IU Southeast. If the transfer candidate cannot arrange for an approved instructor to complete and forward the F 200 instructor evaluation form, then the candidate must complete the F 200 course at I U Southeast prior to application.
