Admissions Requirements
In order to apply for admission to the Elementary Education program at IUS, you must attend an application orientation session. These sessions are held at various times during the beginning of each semester. Please contact the Academic Success Center (formerly known as the University Division) at 1-812-941-2243 for information regarding specific times and locations of the application meetings. Applications are only available through the Academic Success Center.
To be considered for admission, all applicants must meet the following basic criteria stated below:
- Completion of the following courses (excluding developmental courses)
- ENG-W131 Elementary Composition or equivalent, with a grade of C or better
- EDUC-F200 Education and American Culture or equivalent, with a grade of C or better
- SPCH-S121 Public Speaking or equivalent with a grade of C or better
- Completion of MATH T101 Math for Elementary Teachers I or equivalent with a grade of C or better
- Successful completion of one course from the Social Studies Content Block (see Elementary Education Undergraduate Program Check Sheet)
- Successful completion of one course from the Science Content Block (see Elementary Education Undergraduate Program Check Sheet)
- Attainment of an overall IUS GPA of at least a 2.5
- PRAXIS I (PPST) scores equal to or higher than the Indiana requirements: Reading - 176, Writing - 172. Math - 175. Admissions are based on rankings determined by the review criteria; a maximum of 50 students will be accepted. Four of the 50 admission positions are reserved for students who plan to obtain special education certification and must be approved by Elementary Education and Special Education Faculty.
A copy of the PRAXIS I (PPST) scores must be attached to application form. Do not submit the original as it may be needed at a later date. Applications without the PRAXIS I scores will not be reviewed.
Review and Notification Process |
|
Applications will be reviewed by the Elementary Education Admission Committee according to the review criteria below. After the Elementary Education Admission
Committee deliberates, an applicant will receive a letter indicating his/her admission status for the upcoming semester. The information cannot be given out over the phone.
|
Review Criteria |
|
All applicants who have met the basic admission criteria at the time of application will have their applications reviewed and ranked according to the scale below. The admissions GPA will be calculated by the Elementary Education Program Admission Committee on 18 credit hours using the grades in F200, W131, S121, T101, the Social Studies content course and the Science content course. If applicants have more than one Social Studies content course and/or Science content course completed, then the course with the higher grade will be used to calculate the admissions GPA.
Transfer students who have completed F200 (or a similar course that permits the student to get transfer credit for F200 ) at another postsecondary institution must have the instructor of the F200 course or its equivalent complete and forward the Indiana University Southeast F200 instructor evaluation form. If the transfer student is unable to contact the instructor of the F200 course or its equivalent then the transfer student may have the instructor of another completed education course that has an elementary school experience complete and forward the F200 instructor evaluation form as long as prior approval is obtained from the coordinator of the Elementary Education Program at IUS. If the transfer student cannot arrange for an approved instructor to complete and forward the F200 instructor evaluation form, then the student must complete F200 at Indiana University Southeast prior to application.

Cohorts |
|
A cohort (group) of no more than 50 students is admitted into the program each fall and spring. This cohort will progress through the program together. Students
who were admitted but drop out of a subsequent methods block may enter a later cohort only if space permits. Transfer students who apply and are accepted (using
the above criteria) for blocks later in the program will be admitted into the cohort and must wait until that cohort reaches the appropriate block of courses.
|
Transfer Students |
|
Students must submit a formal petition requesting that transfer courses be counted upon acceptance into the program. IUS students who are transferring from
another school within IUS use these same procedures. These petitions must be submitted to Dr. Guy Wall, Hillside Hall (HH) 0024, before the start of each semester. Transfer students
who apply and are accepted (using the criteria for the cohort) for blocks later in the program will be admitted into the cohort. These transfer students must wait
until that cohort reaches the appropriate block of courses unless space permits entrance at an earlier time/cohort. For example, students completing the equivalent
of the P250 block at another university and who are accepted into the Fall, 2005 cohort will enroll in the General Methods Block in Spring, 2006, unless there is space in the
Fall, 2005 General Methods Block.
