Admissions Requirements
In order to apply for admission to the Elementary Educational Undergraduate Program, you must attend an application orientation session. These sessions are held at various times during the beginning of each semester. Please contact the School of Education (812/941.2386) for information regarding specific times and locations of the application meetings. Applications are available at http://www.ius.edu/education/elementary/pdf/ELEM%20Application.pdf. Applications must be submitted to the Coordinator by October 15 for Spring cohorts and by February 15 for Fall.
To apply for admission to the elementary education undergraduate program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Completed EDUC-F 200, ENG-W 131, SPCH-S 121, MATH-T 101 (C or better for each), and passing at least one science content course and one social studies content course. (Candidates who completed F 200 or its equivalent at another institution must acquire and send to their instructor a "Field Placement Assessment" form from the School of Education.)
- Completed or be enrolled in all required language arts courses.
- Have a C or better in all core language arts and math courses completed.
- Have a passing score (as determined by the IU system and/or the state DOE) on the Praxis 1, or its alternatives.
- Including current enrollment, candidates will have at least 55 credit hours towards their general education requirements as outlined by the Elementary Education Program checksheet. A maximum of 50 candidates will be admitted to the elementary education program each semester.
If more than 50 applicants meet the minimum criteria for admission, student acceptance will be determined based on a 12 point system as described below:
- Average earned GPA in ENG-W 131, SPCH-S 121, MATH-T 101, their highest grade in a social studies content course, their highest grade in science content course, and EDUC-F 200 (total GPA multiplied by 2, for a maximum total of 8 points).
- Evaluation from EDUC-F 200 instructor (up to 4 points).
All students are admitted conditionally until all grades are posted and a 2.5 minimum GPA is verified for the semester prior to enrollment in Block I.

Review and Notification Process
Applications will be reviewed by the Elementary Education Admission Committee according to the review criteria below. After the Elementary Education Admission Committee deliberates, an applicant will receive a letter indicating his/her admission status for the upcoming semester. The information cannot be given out over the phone.
Review Criteria
All applicants who have met the basic admission criteria at the time of application will have their applications reviewed and ranked according to the scale below. The admissions GPA will be calculated by the Elementary Education Program Admission Committee on 18 credit hours using the grades in EDUC-F 200, ENG-W 131, SPCH-S 121, MATH-T 101, the Social Studies content course and the Science content course. If applicants have more than one Social Studies content course and/or Science content course completed, then the course with the higher grade will be used to calculate the admissions GPA.
Transfer candidates who have completed EDUC-F 200 (or a transfered equivalent) at another postsecondary institution must have the instructor of the course complete the Indiana University Southeast "EDUC-F 200 instructor evaluation form", and forward it to the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program. If the transfer candidate is unable to contact the instructor of the EDUC-F 200 course (or its equivalent), then the transfer candidate may have the instructor of another completed education course (that has an elementary school field experience) complete the EDUC-F 200 instructor evaluation form, as long as prior approval is obtained from the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program at IU Southeast. If the transfer candidate cannot arrange for an approved instructor to complete and forward the EDUC-F 200 instructor evaluation form, then the candidate must complete the EDUC-F 200 course at I U Southeast prior to application.

Cohorts
A cohort (group) of no more than 50 students is admitted into the program each fall and spring. This cohort will progress through the program together. Candidates who were admitted but drop out of a subsequent methods block may enter a later cohort only if space permits.
Transfer Candidates
Candidates who transfer to IU Southeast from other institutions should contact the the faculty member who advises transfer candidates: Dr Barbara Thompson-Book (812/941.2563, bacthomp@ius.edu).
Candidates must submit a formal petition requesting that transfer courses be counted upon acceptance into the program. IU Southeast candidates who are transferring from another IU Southeast school/program use these same procedures.
