Program Completion Requirements
- Assessment
The IU Southeast School of Education has a performance-based assessment system. Adapted from Danielson [1996] and based on INTASC principles and standards from the Indiana Department of Education's Office of Educator Licensing and Development, The Elementary Education Program Standards form the foundation for the evaluation of candidates seeking licensing in Elementary: Primary and Elementary: Intermediate.
Required for certification, but not program completion, are state-mandated tests administered through the Educational Testing Service. Go to www.ets.org/praxis to register.
Indiana requires:
#0011, Elementary Education: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment and
#0300, Reading Specialist.
See all IN tests and passing scores at: http://www.doe.state.in.us/dps/teacherprep/testing/welcome.html.
Kentucky requires:
#0014, Elementary Education: Content Knowledge and
#0522, Principles of Learning and Teaching, K-6.
See all KY tests and passing scores at: http://www.kyepsb.net/assessment/teachertests.asp.
While NOT a program completion requirement, IN requires all persons who apply for an initial educator's license to provide proof of CPR certification, earned through an approved provider. For more information on attaining this certification, please click HERE.
The Elementary Education Program contains...
- Program Standards and Principles
The Elementary Education Program Standards incorporate the INTASC Principles and Indiana Office of Educator Licensing and Development standards for Elementary: Primary and for Elementary: Intermediate. There are five standards each with approximately six components or indicators that the standard is met.
- Program Evaluation Rubrics (Click HERE to view Rubrics)
Each component/indicator from the Elementary Education Program Standards is evaluated using a rubric with specific descriptions of three scores or achievement levels: Unacceptable, Basic, or Proficient. "Proficient" is the target that all candidates should achieve.
- Portfolio
The program portfolio documents the candidate's attainment of each component or indicator of the Elementary Education Program standards. It is submitted by the end of the sixth week of student teaching. Two faculty members review the portfolio and the score becomes part of Summative Decision Point 4. The portfolio is returned to the candidate during the Exit Interview which occurs very soon after the end of student teaching.
