Gifted Education License

IU Southeast School of Education offers a program of coursework leading to an Indiana K-12 Gifted and Talented Education license. The required courses will be rotated over a 2-year period:

Required Coursework

  • W551 (3 credit hours) Education and Psychology of Gifted and Talented
  • W552 (3) Curriculum for the Gifted and Talented
  • W553 (3) Methods and Materials for Gifted and Talented
  • W595 (3) Practicum in Gifted and Talented Education*
  • One additional 3-hour IU approved "content course" of the student's choice (for example L625 Shakespeare, G420 Regional Geology Field Trip, S313 Religion and Society, or L304 Marine Biology).  This content course should be taken within six years of applying for the G&T license and may not be coursework used for the Bachelor's degree.  Education coursework is not acceptable for meeting the content course requirement for this license.

* The clinical and field-based experiences (W595 Practicum) includes professional supervision and feedback as a summer clinical experience, taken through IUS, and designed to assess G&T standards related to candidate effectiveness for teaching in gifted educational settings. W551, W552 and W553 are required to be completed prior to the practicum. Exceptions must be approved by the SOE Gifted Education Coordinator, Dr Carolyn Babione.
