Counseling Program Admissions Requirements

There are 2 Application Processes for the School Counseling Master’s Program: #1, seeking admission to the Program; and then #2, when pre-requisites are met, seeking admission to the Clinical Cohort. For candidates admitted after 7/15/2011, a two-year gap in coursework will require a new application for re-admission into any graduate program, and a mandatory meeting with a program advisor. The re-admitted candidate must then comply with any new program requirements, if any.

Application #1:

Apply to the School of Education Graduate School as a School Counseling Major. Acceptance into the Graduate School as a School Counseling Major will allow candidates to register for the pre-requisite courses needed before submitting Application #2, for the Clinical Cohort.

Steps for Application #1--Apply to SOE Graduate School as a School Counseling Major:

1. Attend an Advising Session https://www.ius.edu/education/Events.cfm and complete the form provided at the session.
2. Complete the online application: https://onestart.iu.edu/sisad-prd/p/Guest.do?methodToCall=start&inst=IUSEA&career=GRAD
Please note that neither a Personal Statement nor Departmental Questions are required.
3. Submit all transcripts to:  School of Education, HH0024, IU Southeast, 4201 Grant Line Rd, New Albany, IN  47150
4. Candidates must have at least a 3.0 Graduate GPA or a 2.5 Undergraduate GPA.
5. Transcript(s) will be reviewed for 2 Pre-Requisites and 3 Pre-Core Courses.
6. Candidate will receive a detailed Course Checklist, indicating which Pre-Req.s and Pre-Core courses must be taken before beginning Application #2 (Application to the Clinical Cohort).

What are the Pre-Requisites and Pre-Core courses for Application #2?
The Pre-Requisite courses are:

  1. Classroom Management
  2. Intro to Special Education

NOTE: If Candidate has previously taken these courses, either at the undergraduate or the graduate level, the program will accept these transfer credits and the candidate will not have to re-take these courses. All transfer coursework must be graded "B" or better.

The Pre-Core courses are Graduate Level courses:

  1. Social Issues in Education
  2. Advanced Child Development
  3. Orientation to Counseling (this course must be taken at IU Southeast, no more than six years prior to submitting Application #2)

NOTE: If Candidates have previously taken these graduate level courses, they may receive transfer credit for them, but ALL CANDIDATES MUST TAKE EDUC-G 500 at IU Southeast no more than 6 years prior to submitting Application #2, the Application to the Clinical Cohort. All transfer coursework must be graded “B” or better.

Application #2:

NOTE: Candidates may still be completing requirements in the same Spring semester in which they apply for the Clinical Cohort, but must be finished with all requirements at the end of that semester to be eligible for acceptance into the Clinical Cohort. If you are still taking courses during the spring semester in which you are applying for the Clinical Cohort, you must submit a statement from your instructor(s) indicating your grade at midterm.

Steps for Application #2--Apply to the Clinical Cohort:

  1. Complete necessary Pre-req and Pre-core courses, as indicated by the Academic Checklist you received when you were admitted to the Program.
  2. Read detailed instructions on how to compile the Application #2 Binder.

  3. Attend Mandatory Advising Session for Applying to the Clinical Cohort. Please click here for the meeting dates.
  4. Get all Recommendation Forms from the website, and send to appropriate persons.
(Forms can be found at http://www.ius.edu/education/Graduate/forms_counsel.cfm.)
  5. Submit Application #2 Binder by March 1st

Points of Consideration for Application #2:

  • Successful completion of Application #1, including successful completion of all necessary Pre-req and Pre-Core courses, does not guarantee acceptance into the Clinical Cohort.
  • Applications for the Clinical Cohort are accepted once a year; the last Monday of March.
  • Only 16 Candidates will be admitted each year into the Clinical Cohort.
  • Candidates are admitted in late April and will begin taking classes in June and July.
  • The Cohort is NOT self-paced: candidates will take courses every semester (including summers) for 2 years.

Material Submitted/Included in Application #2, to Clinical Cohort:

Candidates must follow the instructions for the Application to the Clinical Cohort (instructions can be found at http://www.ius.edu/education/graduate/forms_counsel.cfm). All material should be placed in a 2 inch, hardback, three ring binder. Make sure your name is on the spine and front of the binder.

Include the following material in the binder, in this order:

  1. Resume (see directions for how to complete the resume).
  2. Personal Statement (see directions for completing the Personal Statement).
  3. Field Experience Agreement form signed by principal (for teachers and other educators).
  4. Terms of Agreement for IU Southeast Counseling Program; signed and dated.
  5. Assertion Paper from EDUC-G 500, including rubric and instructor comments.

Also part of the Application, but NOT included in the Binder: Three letters of recommendation: recommendation forms are on the website at: http://www.ius.edu/education/graduate/forms_counsel.cfm. The candidate must give these forms to the correct people, and must make sure the completed forms get mailed directly to the Coordinator.  These recommendation forms are due March 1st, just like the Applications.

Recommendation forms should be mailed to:
IU Southeast School Counseling Coordinator
School of Education, Hillside Hall
4201 Grant Line Road
New Albany, IN 47150

Application #2, for the Clinical Cohort, is evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Admission GPA (undergrad or grad).
  • GPA in pre-core classes.
  • Grades on assessment papers in EDUC-G 500.
  • Total points on the 3 recommendation forms.
  • Years of post-BA/BS experience with K-12 age children (minimum 2 years required).
  • Personal statement.
  • Bonus points: experience working in diverse settings; experience working with students with disabilities; leadership experience; additional training related to counseling.
  • In-Person Interviews.
  • Participation in a Short Activity following In-Person Interviews

The highest scoring applicants are accepted. Usually two candidates are placed on a waiting list in case someone drops before the first class. Candidates who are not accepted may be considered for the following year, but must re-apply. Those re-submitted applications will go back into the pool and compete against all others; they will not be given preference.

Application #2 Deadline: March 1st; these applications are only accepted once a year.

TAKING THE PRE-REQUISITE AND PRE-CORE COURSES DOES NOT GUARANTEE ENTRANCE INTO THE CLINICAL COHORT. CANDIDATES MUST COMPETE AGAINST OTHER APPLICANTS FOR THE 16 PROGRAM SLOTS.
