Admission to the major occurs in steps. The first step is acceptance into IUS. Students can apply online for admission to IUS.
In students' second or third semester at IUS they apply for admission to an Elementary/Special Education student cohort group. Students must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA, complete certain general education courses, and pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST; Praxis I: Reading - 176; Writing - 172; Math - 175) to be admitted.
Until accepted into a cohort, students are assigned to an advisor in the Student Success Center. Upon acceptance into the program, students' files are transferred to the School of Education and a program advisor is assigned. Firm declaration of the major is expected during the second semester in the cohort group.
For more specific information about the process and criteria, see the Special Education program handbook.
