Admissions Requirements

Undergraduates

Admission to the major occurs in steps. The first step is acceptance into IUS. Students can apply online for admission to IUS.

In students' second or third semester at IUS they apply for admission to an Elementary/Special Education student cohort group. Students must have at least a 2.5 overall GPA, complete certain general education courses, and pass the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST; Praxis I: Reading - 176; Writing - 172; Math - 175) to be admitted.

Until accepted into a cohort, students are assigned to an advisor in the Student Success Center. Upon acceptance into the program, students' files are transferred to the School of Education and a program advisor is assigned. Firm declaration of the major is expected during the second semester in the cohort group.

For more specific information about the process and criteria, see the Special Education program handbook.

Graduate Level

Graduate students seeking their initial license or adding another teaching area to their existing license apply directly to the School of Education for acceptance into Graduate Studies.

Specific requirements for admission to the graduate level second license option or the post-baccalaureate second teaching area option can be found in the Special Education program handbook.

Note: Upon completion of their program and securing full teaching licenses students in the post-baccalaureate program may apply to the Master's Degree in Elementary or Secondary Education program.

Critical: Students who have an Indiana Emergency Permit or a Kentucky Probationary License should contact the program coordinator, Dr. Cathy Shea (Phone: 812-941-2466; E-Mail: cshea@ius.edu) directly in order to expedite the admission decision process.
