Elementary Transition to Teaching Program Admissions Requirements

The 2002 Indiana mandate required the following for Transition to Teaching program participants:

  • An earned bachelor's degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) from an accredited institution of higher education, or
  • A bachelor's degree with a 2.50 GPA (on a 4.00 scale), and five (5) years' related professional experience as required for T2T elementary admissions.

All applications for Elementary Transition to Teaching Program must be received by the School of Education at IU Southeast by 4:00 pm on November 1.

Applying to the Elementary Transition to Teach Program 

  1. Attend an Advising Session: https://www.ius.edu/education/Events.cfm.  Only applications of candidates who attend an advising session will be processed.  
  2. Complete the online Application:  https://onestart.iu.edu/sisad-prd/p/Guest.do?methodToCall=start&inst=IUSEA&career=GRAD  
  3. In the Personal Statement area of the online application, upload an essay that explains why you would be a good candidate for this program and what strengths you would bring to teaching.  
  4. If your overall GPA is below 3.0, upload a separate essay that documents 5 years’ related professional experience with school age children in the Department Questions area of the online application.
  5. Two letters of recommendation are required – one letter addressing your strength as a candidate for this program and another addressing your character.  Use the Recommendation Tab on the online application to request electronically. If desired, letters may be mailed directly to Records Specialist—address below.
  6. Submission of application requires $35 application fee. ***Please note that persons who have previously paid an application fee for an IU Southeast graduate program need not pay another application fee.  Should one wish to investigate whether this applies to oneself, please contact our School’s Records Specialist at mwild@ius.edu or 812/941.2388.  
  7. Submit official transcripts from all colleges attended (unless from an IU School) to the address provided below.  
  8. Submit results of Praxis I (PPST) scores in the areas of Reading, Math and Writing, or other acceptable scores (see #3 on Admissions Checklist – link below) to the address provided below.
  9. Official scores from PRAXIS II Elementary Ed 5031- All content areas
  10. Alternative options for meeting standards are listed in the Admissions Checklist (click on option below). These are all handled on a case by case basis.  You must contact the Elementary Transition to Teaching Coordinator if you are interested.
