The Improvement of Learning Committee (IOLC) proposes that section C (below) of the committee’s structure and responsibility description be eliminated.
This revision creates a better fit with the restructuring of
the committee that occurred last year when the Director of the
The IOLC also feels that the advisory subcommittee is no longer necessary since the SDC is firmly established and it now has an explicit mission, which was not the case when this mandate was written. The SDC is also more fully staffed and IUS has an office that does institutional research.
Improvement of Learning Committee
a. The Improvement of Learning Committee shall consist of seven elected faculty
members, the Associate Vice‑Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the FACET liaison, the
director of ILTE, and one student member. Each of the schools/divisions with elected
senators and the library faculty shall elect its own representatives on the committee.
These representatives shall serve two‑year staggered terms. The Associate
Vice‑Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the FACET liaison, and the director of ILTE shall
serve as ex‑officio members of the committee.
b. This committee shall be responsible for devising and recommending policies,
procedures, and programs that would improve teaching and learning. It shall advise the
Coordinator
of the
services, including the assessment of student and university needs, the evaluation of
existing classes, and services to offer in the future. In addition, the committee shall
oversee the administration of the Student Evaluation of Teaching Program and shall review
applications for grants‑in‑aid of teaching and shall recommend allocation of IUS funds for
improvement of teaching. The committee shall also review nominees for the Distinguished
Teaching Award and select the recipient. The recipient of the award each year shall be
nominated by the committee for the all‑university Distinguished Teaching Award the
following year. In addition, the committee shall review applications submitted by faculty
members for faculty conferences and workshops pertaining to improvement of teaching
and make appropriate recommendations regarding those applications.
c. This committee will appoint a sub‑committee that will serve in an advisory capacity to
the
representatives, with one of those being the Coordinator of the Student Development
Center. The other two members will be appointed based on their keen interest in and/or
knowledge of the
The duties of the subcommittee shall be to:

· 3) suggest ideas for data collections/research that could impact
and/or help evaluate the program.
