Re:       Proposal for a minor in Criminal Justice

Proposal for a Minor in Criminal Justice

Indiana University Southeast implemented the BS in Criminal Justice in the fall of 2002.  As of the date of this proposal the program has approximately 60 majors.  It is currently housed within the School of Social Sciences but it is also a system-wide program under the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA).  We are requesting the approval of a minor in Criminal Justice by Indiana University Southeast (via the Academic Policies Committee and the Faculty Senate).  The minor will be open to any registered student at Indiana University Southeast and will appeal to students from a broad range of majors.

The curriculum is set by SPEA and is as follows:

Required:

J101 – American Criminal Justice System (3 hours)

One of the following:

J201 – Theoretical Foundations of Criminal Justice Policies (3 hours)

J301 – Substantive Criminal Law (3 hours)

Three of the following:

J201 – Theoretical Foundations of Criminal Justice Policies (3 hours)

J301 – Substantive Criminal Law (3 hours)

J306 – The Criminal Courts (3 hours)

J321 – American Policing (3 hours)

J331 – Corrections (3 hours)

Total number of hours required for the minor is 15.

Note that J201 and J301 can only count in one of the above categories.
