Student Opportunities

The department of Fine Arts at Indiana University Southeast offers students many avenues of support and professional experiences to augment their studio and academic education through scholarships and internships. All awards are competitive and require reviews of academic progress reports and portfolios of visual work.

Awards & Scholarships

Scholarships available for students in the Fine Arts at IU Southeast include the Martha K. Stem Scholarship in the Visual Arts, includes tuition, books, and studio materials for qualified students (approximately $3000 annual). The Rebecca Jennings Award in the Visual Arts provides financial support for currently enrolled students. Both awards are given based on GPA and competitive portfolio of work.

Internships & Careers

IU Southeast's Internship Program combines academic instruction with practical on-the-job training. It allows employers the opportunity to help shape a college student's future while the student is able to exercise learned skills to provide a service for the employer. Career Opportunities

There are numerous career opportunities available for graduates in Fine Arts including continued study in master’s level programs. Post baccalaureate degrees in Fine Art, such as the M.A.T. or the M.F.A., lead to teaching careers at the primary, secondary, and college level. A Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts can also prepare students for careers in arts related fields, such as print and Web design, gallery direction, and exhibiting work as a professional artist.

Many of our graduates have gone on to complete terminal degrees in studio art and currently enjoy careers in the visual arts throughout the country. These include positions as university professors, museum curators and directors, gallery owners and directors, designers and design firm owners, and illustrators.

The Design Center offers graphic design students an on campus opportunity to work as interns on pro-bono design and media projects for IU Southeast and the surrounding community.

Student Trips

[Photo] Students on a Fine Arts trip to New York in Spring of 2007.A number of student trips are arranged each semester to broaden the student’s experience of both historical and contemporary art forms. Some of these are short trips to local galleries. Others are daylong excursions to museums and galleries in Bloomington, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville, among others. In addition one or more multi-day expeditions are arranged almost every year to Chicago, New York City, Washington D.C., and other major artistic and cultural centers.
