Introduction Phase I of the residential facilities opened in August 2008, introducing an apartment community that utilizes the “lodge” design as its primary feature. The lodge concept is unique in that the design lends itself to community development while also responding to the privacy needs of students. It also provides for interior apartment entrance doors that facilitate greater safety and security for students. The lodge concept features a central Great Room that residents walk through to get to their apartments. The interior apartment doors surround and open out to that large, central space. The Great Rooms are appointed with structural as well as decorative features (e.g. a fireplace) that create the feeling of a main living room for the facility even though each apartment has its own, smaller living room. The five lodges are situated next to our picturesque campus lake. Both literally and symbolically, the residential facilities are at the center of the campus to promote academic learning, seamless educational opportunities, and close access to the campus infrastructure that students desire. Three lodges house 71 students each and two house 87 each, for a total occupancy of 403 students. Phase II, to be designed and constructed when occupancy and demand levels warrant, is planned to house an additional 300 students. For more information, please visit http://www.ius.edu/housing/.
