Study Abroad

While students are not required to study abroad as part of the International Studies major, they are very strongly encouraged to do so. There are extensive opportunities to study in programs that will advance a student's language skills or simply provide study opportunities in English. Programs may be as short as a few weeks or as long as an academic year. The wide range of programs available makes it possible for most students to add this invaluable experience to their education in International Studies. Students should usually plan to complete their General Education and International Studies core classes on campus and then take as many of their regional concentration courses as they can while abroad. Contact the campus coordinator for study abroad, Dr. Jean Abshire, for information on study abroad programs or visit www.indiana.edu/~overseas/ for detailed information on programs offered by Indiana University.

Internships and Other Steps to Transition to Your Career

Students are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities prior to graduation and may want to enroll in COAS-Q 400 Job Search Strategies for Liberal Arts Students. IU Southeast Career Services can assist with both of these opportunities which are designed to help students in making a smooth transition from college to career. With the internships, the Internship Coordinator will assist you in finding a position in an internationally-related site. The internships can be taken for credit and are an excellent way to demonstrate to potential employers that you have the skills and abilities for working in an applied setting and that you can integrate your studies with your work activities. The Job Search Strategies course is a one-credit course that will give you assistance in the details of marketing yourself, including resumes and cover letters, interviewing strategies, etc.
