Career Opportunities
The Journalism Program at IU Southeast is designed for students interested in a career in one of the many areas of journalism:
- newspapers
- magazine
- television
- radio
- photography
- public relations
- internet
- corporate communications
The program also meets the needs of students who wish to teach journalism
at the high school level or pursue a post-graduate degree in journalism or
mass communications.
The program provides real-world experience with its two-semester internship
on the weekly campus newspaper, The
Horizon.
The Horizon is a student run and student produced newspaper. The paper
consistently wins awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association, the
Hoosier State Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Graduates of the IU Southeast journalism program work on daily and weekly newspapers as:
- editors
- reporters
- page designers
- copy editors
- photographers
Many also work in:
- broadcasting
- public relations
- advertising
- corporate communications
- related fields
Other graduates find employment in the business world, where their ability to investigate, organize and write opens up many career opportunities.
The journalism program is designed primarily for the following students:
- Those who wish to enter journalism, especially with daily and weekly newspapers
or specialized publications
- Those who want to learn and develop journalistic skills that are valuable
in related fields such as public relations, advertising, corporate communications,
graphic arts and photography
- Elementary and secondary education students who may have responsibility for advising student publications, and teachers in area schools who advise student publications and wish to learn more about media and publishing
