What is Journalism?
The study of journalism has both a practical and a theoretical side. The practical side emphasizes the development of writing, reporting, editing, design and photography skills used in the mass media. The theoretical side, closely tied to the social sciences, studies the social, political, psychological, historical and economic impact of the mass media and the ethical standards and practices of media professionals.
Special Features
The cornerstone of the journalism program at IU Southeast is the two-semester internship on the weekly campus newspaper, The Horizon. This internship gives students real world experience in reporting, editing, photography, page design and advertising sales. The paper, run by students, consistently wins awards from the Indiana Collegiate Press Association, the Hoosier State Press Association and Society of Professional Journalism.
Another special feature of the program is the individual attention journalism students receive. Enrollment in most journalism classes is restricted to 15 to 20 students so instructors can work closely and effectively with each student enrolled. Journalism students are also assigned faculty advisers who provide academic counseling and career planning.
