Career Opportunities
Learning another language develops critical thinking skills. A second language broadens appreciation for one's culture and that of others. It prepares students for active citizenship in an increasingly multi-cultural and multi-lingual world. In a highly competitive, intricate global economy, proficiency in one or two languages represents and invaluable asset.
The Spanish, French, and German undergraduate programs are designed for those who desire a greater understanding of the world through the study of language, contemporary culture, history, literature, music, and film. Specifically, Spanish, French, and German majors receive excellent professional preparation for a career as language teachers (note that there are additional requirements for teacher certification) and for entry into an advanced degree program. To expand employment options, students are encouraged to combine a language degree with a major in one or more additional fields.

- Education
- Business: International law, banking, U.S. representative for foreign companies or for foreign branches of U.S. firms; patent attorney, advertising; sales; marketing; public relation; secretarial and clerical positions; medical organizations; cultural organizations.
- Communications: Journalism; foreign correspondent, photographer; TV or radio writer, reporter; advertising for international markets; international telephone operator.
- Travel and Tourism: Travel agent; tour guide; hotel, restaurant employee; flight attendant; airport personnel.
- Library: Librarian in U.S. or overseas.
- Social Services: Law enforcement; welfare; health services; income tax consultant; missionary, minister; nursing; vocational counselor; case worker.
- Scientific Fields: Technical writer, translator; technical liaison for U.S. firms abroad.
- Government: (both State and Federal) CIA, FBI, United Nations, Armed Services.
