IU Southeast Music Department Alumnus, Duncan Bohannon

Duncan Bohannon (BA, 2007) is currently a graduate student at the North Carolina School of the Arts where he is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Film Music Composition. Duncan has been composing since 2004 and has studied the world of film music for several years. He also has more than 15 years of experience in piano performance, and was a double major at IU Southeast in Piano Performance and Music Technology. During his undergraduate studies, he was active in both performance and composition, winning IU Southeast's Concerto Competition and receiving recognition by two IU Southeast competitions for his film scoring project, Nosferatu.

Today, he is taking what he learned at IU Southeast and tackling new challenges. Duncan writes about his experience at North Carolina:

In the past year while working towards obtaining my Master's degree, my initial goal was to simply do my best to keep up with the rest of the film music students. However, after nearly six months of constant writing and varied film composing assignments, I've exceeded my own expectations.

And that he did. After only one year under his belt at North Carolina, Duncan was hired to write the music for his first large independent film project, called Fighter (see www.fighterthemovie.com to learn more about the film). He also received an assistantship under faculty film composer, David McHugh, which has afforded him numerous opportunities to assist in projects that allow him to see the world of film music beyond the classroom. Duncan is tackling these challenges with a renewed spirit. When asked about his goals for the future, Duncan didn’t define anything specific, but did say, “My primary goal, not only for the next few years, but for the rest of my earthly life, is to continue to exceed my expectations, to want to do better than ‘just good enough.’” To learn more about his work and to hear clips of his music, please visit Duncan’s blog at: http://www.bohannonfamily.com/duncan
