Ann Glazer Niren (music history and literature) has served on the music department faculty for well over two decades. She has taught piano, music appreciation, music fundamentals, and humanities during her time at IU Southeast, but currently, she teaches the four upper-level music literature/history courses. She also serves as an accompanist at IUS. Dr. Niren has been recognized twice for her teaching ability; in 1998, she was the recipient of an IUS Teaching Excellence Recognition Award, and in 2005, she won the IUS Distinguished Teaching Award for part-time faculty. In addition, she has received several fellowships and grants for her research. In 2013, she was named as a finalist at the University of Kentucky’s Three-Minute Thesis Competition, in which participants distill the basic aspects of their research into a three minute presentation. Dr. Niren has published articles on Leonard Bernstein and composer/pianist Marian McPartland, and she has given presentations on Leonard Bernstein and Terry Riley at several conferences. She is a member of the American Musicological Society, the College Music Society, and the American Society for Jewish Music. Dr. Niren graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Composition with a concentration in piano from Indiana University in Bloomington. Her principle professors were Harvey Sollberger in composition and Thomas Linde, in piano. She received her master’s in music theory from Northwestern University and her Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Kentucky. Her dissertation is entitled, “The Relationship Between Solomon Braslavsky, Congregation Mishkan Tefila, and Leonard Bernstein,” which she hopes to transform into a book in the not-so-distant future. |
