Getting Started

Are you enrolled in IUS classes now using VA benefits?

YES.    Fill in the Veterans Educational Benefits Worksheet and attach your class schedule, drop it off at the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official. We will process your semester certification.

NO.     The following are the basic services that we can help you pursue  (You may qualify for more than one benefit - however, you can only use one benefit at a time):

  1. I have been at another college where I received VA benefits. I want to transfer my benefits.

    The Registrar's office does not process your certification until you are admitted to IU Southeast; you must first see the Admissions office and be admitted to our university. After you have been notified of admission you can come into the Registrar's office to fill in Form 1995 (See Forms). Return the completed 1995 to the Registrar front desk and we will send it to the VA office.

    Also, at your first opportunity you can register and fill in the Veterans Education Benefits Worksheet and attached your class schedule, drop it off at the Registrar, VA Certifying Official desk. We will process your semester certification.

  2. I have never used VA benefits, my parent was partially disabled (less than 100%) and I heard VA takes care of my tuition fees.

    See the State VA Representative in the IU Southeast Financial Aid Office for CVO (Child of Veteran Office - formerly known as Child of Disabled Veteran). This is a State of Indiana Aid (Remission of Fees) not Federal Aid and is not processed through the IU Southeast Registrar's office.

  3. I have never used VA benefits, my parent/spouse was totally disabled or deceased due to military service. This program is called:  Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance (DEA), Chapter 35.

    Complete form 5490, children have to apply and use benefits between age 18 and 26, and return to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official, and we will send it to the VA Regional Office or you can mail directly to the VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63116-6830. You can also apply online. A letter from the VA will be provided back to you after they have processed your request.

    Also, at your first opportunity you can register and fill in the Veterans Education Benefits Worksheet and attach your class schedule, drop it off, along with any forms if you mailed directly to the VA Regional Office to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official. We will process your semester certification.

    NOTE: If you live in Indiana, and/or your parent/spouse served with an Indiana unit of the military you may also be eligible for State of Indiana CVO (See #2 above)

  4. I have never used VA benefits since I got out of the military from active duty. The appropriate Federal program is Chapter 30, Montgomery G.I. Bill.

    Get your #4 copy of DD 214 , complete form 1990 and return to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official, and we will send it to the VA Regional Office or you can mail directly to the VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63116-6830. You can also apply online. A letter from the VA will be provided back to you after they have processed your request.

    Also, at your first opportunity you can register and fill in the Veterans Education Benefits Worksheet and attach your class schedule, drop it off, along with any forms if you mailed directly to the VA Regional Office to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official. We will process your semester certification.

  5. I have never used my VA Benefits; I am a Reservist/Guardsman. The appropriate Federal program for Reservist/Guardsman is Chapter 1606. Reservist/Guardsman who served on active duty for more than 90 after 11 September 2001 qualifies for Chapter 1607 benefits.

    Complete form 1990, a copy of your DD Form 2384 NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility) from your units administrative office, a copy of your Kicker Contract (if you are eligible for the Kicker Incentive) and for Chapter 1607 VA Students a copy of order's or DD Form 214 showing periods of active duty and return to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official, and we will send it to the VA Regional Office or you can mail directly to the VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63116-6830. You can also apply online. A letter from the VA will be provided back to you after they have processed your request.

    Also, at your first opportunity you can register and fill in the Veterans Education Benefits Worksheet and attach your class schedule, drop it off, along with any forms if you mailed directly to the VA Regional Office to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official. We will process your semester certification.

  6. I am a VA Vocational Rehab recipient (Chapter 31, at least 20% disabled) at IU Southeast how do I know when IU Southeast gets my information?

    IU Southeast receives your authorization VA Form 28-1905 from Indianapolis. If IU Southeast does not have your VA Form 28-1905, you are not yet authorized. Please contact Mark Reed or Tina Gaskill in Indianapolis at (317) 916-3696 Ext 3742 or Ext 3759.

    Our IU Southeast Registrar office role is to respond to Indianapolis regarding your enrollment. You can not obtain book/supply credit until you are authorized by Indianapolis, and receive our enrollment certification. You can not initiate authorization through the IU Southeast Registrar office, your contact is through your councilor in Indianapolis.

    After you receive confirmation from your councilor that you are authorized the IUS bookstore will check for your valid VA Form 28-1905 before they can credit your books/supplies.

  7. I have served on active duty with the military after 11 Sep 2001, either active Military or activated with the Reserve or National Guard, for a period of 90 + days or more.  I would like to use the Post 9/11 GI Bill (This is the newest GI Bill benefit – Chapter 33).  Chapter 33 is not effective until:  1 August 2009.

Complete form 1990 and return to the Registrar's Office, VA Certifying Official, and we will send it to the VA Regional Office or you can mail directly to the VA Regional Office, P.O. Box 66830, St. Louis, MO 63116-6830. You can also apply online. A letter (Certificate of Eligibility) from the VA will be provided back to you after they have processed your request.

We will process your semester certification.
