SI (Supplemental Instruction)

Supplemental Instruction (SI), developed at the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1973, is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and persistence. SI provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class study sessions for students enrolled in historically difficult courses - courses that have a high rate of D, F, and W grades. The Student Development Center partners with faculty to provide these sessions which are voluntary, free, and facilitated by a trained peer SI Leader.

SI is provided to students who want to improve their understanding of course material and improve their grades. SI is not a substitute for attending class or doing assigned homework.

SI leaders must be recommended by a faculty member and must have completed the course (or course equivalent) in which they want to SI. Students or faculty interested in SI should contact Ryan Norwood at 812-941-2379 or norwoodr@ius.edu.

For Students

  • Regularly attend class meetings; SI is support for the course, not a replacement for lecture or faculty contact.
  • Complete all required readings prior to attending class and SI sessions.
  • Bring questions to sessions; participation is important for understanding difficult concepts. Be ready to share information and ask questions of fellow students.
  • Regularly attend SI. Research shows that students who attend SI at least once a week perform better on exams and earn higher grades.
  • Relax and have fun!
