Degree Requirements

Students receiving a BA in Sociology, Gender Track will complete 36 credit hours, with slightly different requirements than those who are following the traditional BA in Sociology track. The traditional BA in Sociology will not be changed by this proposal. For comparison purposes, the traditional Sociology BA requirements are listed below before the suggested course requirements for the Sociology BA, Gender Track.

Requirements for a Traditional Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology - 30 hours

  • S295 Sophomore Seminar

  • Three elective courses in Sociology

Requirements for a Gender Studies Track in Sociology - 36 hours

  • 24 hours of required courses
    • W100 Gender Studies
    • S163 Social Problems
    • S250 Methods and Statistics I
    • S251 Methods and Statistics II
    • S295 Sophomore Seminar
    • P320 Social Psychology
    • S441 Social Theory
    • S470 Senior Seminar - with a gender-related topic for seminar paper

  • 6 hours of elective courses in Sociology from the following:

  • 3 hours of elective courses in Arts and Letters from the following:
    • AFRO-A 386 Black Feminist Perspectives
    • COAS-X 111 Introduction to Gay and Lesbian Studies
    • COAS-X 111 Introduction to Study of Gender
    • FINA-A 170 Women Artists/The Visual Arts
    • FINA-A 270 Women in the History of Art
    • ENG-L 207 Women and Literature
    • ENG-L 378 Studies in Women and Literature
    • ENG-L 389 Feminist Literary and Cultural Criticism
    • SPCH-S 450 Gender and Communication
    • Or other classes with a gender component and adviser's approval

  • 3 hours of Social Science electives from the following:
    • ECON-E 347 Women and the Economy
    • POLS-Y 200 Contemporary Political Problems (when gender is the topic and approved by adviser)
    • POLS-Y 324 Women and Politics
    • POLS-Y 401 (when gender is the topic and approved by adviser)
    • HIST-H 214 Comparative Women's History
    • HIST-H 231 The Family in History
    • HIST-H 260 History of Women in the United States
    • PSY-P 460 Women: A Psychological Perspective
    • Or other classes with a gender component and adviser's approval

Requirements for a Certificate

  • Completion of the general requirements for a bachelor's degree and requirements for a major in another subject area.

  • 24 credit hours in women's studies, including:
    • W200 - Women in Contemporary American Society
    • W400 - Selected Topics in Women's Studies (senior seminar)
    • 18 credit hours in other women's studies courses which must include:
      • two humanities courses
      • two social science courses
      • at least 12 of these 18 credit hours must be in 300- to 400-level courses.

The 24 credit hours in women's studies would be included in the 120-124 credit hours required for bachelor's degrees. W200 is acceptable as an alternative to the prerequisites of the courses listed in the following paragraph.

  • POLS Y324 - Women and Politics
  • PSY P460 - Women: A Psychological Perspective
  • REL R362 - Religion in Literature
  • SOC S164 - Marital Relations and Sexuality
  • SOC S310 - Sociology of Women in America
  • SOC S338 - Sociology of Sex Roles
  • SOC S413 - Gender and Society
  • SOC S416 - The Family
  • SOC S423 - Sexual Patterns and Variations
  • SPCH S450 - Gender and Communication
  • WOST W495 - Readings and Research in Women's Studies.

Requirements for a Minor

  • 15 credit hours, including:
    • WOST W200 - Women in Contemporary American Society (3 cr.)

  • 12 additional credit hours, including:
    • one course in humanities from FINA A170, FINA A270, ENG L378, or REL R200
    • one course in social sciences from PSY P460, SOC S310, SOC S338, ECON E3471, POLS Y4011, HIST H2251, or HIST H4251
    • electives to total 15 credit hours
