D-18. Services for Students with Disabilities

The mission of the Office of Disability Services is to work with all aspects of the campus and with the community to ensure that students with disabilities receive an equal opportunity to participate and enjoy the benefits of higher education at Indiana University Southeast. In accordance to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act, reasonable accommodations are determined by the Coordinator of the Office of Disability Services on a case-by-case basis to students with a documented need. This documentation must show evidence of a disabling condition that substantially limits a major life activity which would affect equal access to higher educations. Examples of accommodations may be, but are not limited to, access to peer note takers, interpreters, preferential seating, and extended time on tests. Accessible parking permits are available from the Indiana University Southeast police department.

Accommodations, if found reasonable and necessary, must be provided by faculty and staff. However, no accommodation need be provided if they fundamentally alter the academic integrity of the program or if they cause an undue hardship, such as when a student does not give sufficient notice that an accommodation needs to be made. It is the student’s responsibility to self-disclose and to request accommodations. Faculty and staff are expected to maintain the same expectations and requirements for all students.

Students who are approved for testing accommodations by the Office of Disability Services must comply with all testing policies of both the Student Development Center and the Office of Disability Services.

Students or staff who have a disability-related issue may enlist the aid of the office as a liaison to help relieve these situations. Formal grievances; however, should be referred to the Office of Equity and Diversity as outlined in the Indiana University Southeast Grievance Policy. Students whose accommodation requests were denied by the Office of Disability Services may appeal to the vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.
