What is the Applied Research and Education
Center?
The Applied Research and Education Center (AREC) is a non-profit
team of IU Southeast faculty and students that respond to requests
from community and neighborhood based organizations to research
and solve complex social-ecological problems.
The AREC conducts studies, evaluations and needs assessments for
agencies whose concerns include domestic violence, educational opportunities,
workforce preparedness, housing needs, recreation and leisure opportunities,
aging, transportation, childcare and community growth and development.

What are examples of the work we have
done?
Our clients include a cross-section of social service organizations
throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Examples of the types
of services we have provided include:
- Halfway house needs assessment study
- Needs assessment for low and very low income housing
- Domestic violence study
- Research on behalf of regional employers concerning their employee
education and training needs
- Long term planning for local parks and recreation
- Evaluation services for multi-year education and training initiative
