Welcome to Arts and Letters

Annette Wyandotte - Dean

Welcome to the home web site of students majoring in the academic programs listed below, which build on the skills and aptitude you have already developed.  Numerous studies show that Arts and Letters majors

  • have a 97% probability of completing their degrees—higher than all other majors
  • earn larger raises, on average
  • express the highest job satisfaction of all faculty members at universities except engineering and
  • carry higher overall GPAs than all other majors except in health services.

Completing a BA degree in one of our majors opens the door to a choice of many  careers, including professional and executive positions and entry to graduate schools.  Employers are increasingly recognizing that our majors are expert communicators: they can read, write, speak, and listen better, on average, than other majors.

Also, several studies show that the majority of all college students report that taking courses in Arts and Letters has helped them to better understand themselves and the world around them.  Exposed to a varied curriculum, our majors learn how  to problem solve, work outside the box, and think both creatively and critically.  They can adapt to diverse environments, as they are generalists, yet they can also specialize.

Frequent interdisciplinary study in the fields below allows you to explore the artistic and intellectual aspects of human culture and to increase your awareness of individuality and your tolerance for people from all walks of life.  Therefore, what you come to know and do as an Arts and Letters major is life-enhancing and long-lasting even should you change careers.
