Preventing the Slump - 06/24/2009
We had a record number of students graduating at commencement this Spring. They were successful because they were able to stay focused. Whether you have just completed your first year at IU Southeast or are somewhere in between, there are many things you can do to avoid “the slump.”
“The slump,” also referred to as “the sophomore slump,” is often described as the time in between beginning college and entering into your desired academic program. Students have to deal with being more autonomous, developing their identity, or finding their purpose in life.
To keep yourself motivated, you can take advantage of this time to focus your energies on discovering who you are and what will get you closer to graduation and your life goals. After all, you are not the only one going through this time of reflection and anticipation of the future.
If you have just finished your first year, review the following checklist and see if you have developed strategies to persist:
· Have you found a group of college friends with whom you are discussing “What’s the meaning of life?” questions?
· Have you found an organization tool and method that works for you?
· If you have attended some events or participated in volunteer opportunities, have you identified one organization or project in which you would like to take on a leadership role?
· Have you identified a major and looked at your entire academic plan, semester by semester?
· Are you looking for employment opportunities that are related to your career goals?
· Were you able to take more ownership this past spring of your personal information (i.e. insurance, registration, and financial information)?
· Have you written down some goals (academic, social, or personal) you would like to accomplish this next year?
These are only a few questions to ask yourself during your break this summer as you prepare and focus yourself for another successful year. Benjamin Franklin once wrote that those who fail to prepare, prepare to fail. We want to help you prepare for success.
Come to an event or make an appointment to talk with us about how you are doing. Whether it is the Campus Life staff, academic advisor, mentors, career services staff, personal counselor, or faculty, we are here to support you as you develop new challenges and embrace your coming of age.
