New Year, New Traditions - 09/02/2008
Same Friendly Welcome!
Wow—what a week. Week of Welcome kicked off on Monday. I’m a newcomer to campus, too, so I know exactly what some of you were experiencing. A new school year, and in my case, a new school, brings excitement, eagerness, and – yes – even a little nervousness. But before I get into all that, let me introduce myself and tell you why I want to get to know all of you.
As the new (first) Dean of Student Life, I was able to experience new traditions with all of our new students like New Student Orientation Day and Campus Move-in that eased the college jitters last week. The Chancellor introduced everyone to the IU family and students were able to congratulate one another by pinning their fellow IU students. Student orientation leaders and community advisors were around to help new students adjust to a new environment. New Grenadier traditions like the Campus Boogie, Induction Ceremony, Play Fair and the Orientation Picnic provided fun ways for new students to start their first semester. I got to know many student leaders at the Involvement Fair and in the Student Involvement Center on the lower floor of the University Center building.
Take it from one of our student leaders, Courtney Pemberton, who told our new students, “I call orientation ‘the fun day’ because I had such a great experience…At orientation, I learned about involvement on campus, all of the resources that are available to students, and met the friendliest staff, faculty and students.” I want students to feel welcomed on our campus and for them to take time to build meaning relationships and learn life skills that they can use beyond their college years.
During the first week of classes, I saw students catching up with friends, buying books, hanging out in the game room and supporting volleyball’s home opener. The energy on campus was electrifying!
Many new and returning students were welcomed to campus by free cokes, helpful staff, a friendly smile and free food, free food, free food. Channell Barbour, our Assoc. Dir. of Campus Life told me, “campus is all the buzz as students are engaged in games and good music. This is IU Southeast’s time to make students feel like they belong to a close knit family.” Whether students were joining campus groups, watching IUS’ all-star staff compete in inflatable games or trying to win prizes, the week of welcome helped to kick off a new year. I look forward to an exciting year filled with new hopes and new possibilities as IUS shares more of what we can offer to our students’ college experience.
