It’s ALL Greek…to Me! - 09/19/2008
As the advisor to the Greek Council, I just want to say “thank you” to all of the Greeks for a fantastic “Greek Week”! Week Three was the first week-long Greek Week at IU Southeast. The sororities and fraternities banded together to pull off a successful week of events.
The week began with Ultimate Frisbee that turned into Ultimate Football. On Tuesday, students enjoyed water pong. Over 60 students participated in the plaza. Wednesday, there was an intense game of kickball. The teams played so hard on both sides that there wasn’t a clear winner. Water balloons were whizzing around on Thursday. The week ended on Friday with Greekapalooza. Everyone had a great time playing cornhole, playing games, listening to 99.7 WDJX, and just relaxing and getting to know each other.
The Greek Community at IU Southeast consists of the following:
Sororities
- Alpha Phi
- Phi Sigma Sigma
- Sigma Kappa
- Zeta Phi Beta
Fraternities
- Phi Beta Sigma
- Pi Kappa Alpha
- Tau Kappa Epsilon
Fall recruitment for sororities began on Sept. 16th and ends Sept. 29th on “Bid Day”. During recruitment, each sorority will host a series of three events. To be eligible, students must attend one event from each sorority. The last event is the invitational - the invite-only event! Fraternity recruitment is more informal. Students may contact the Office of Campus Life for a complete list of events at 812-941-2316.
As a Greek alumna, I can attest to the benefits of Greek life. I found that meeting so many girls with different backgrounds and interests was amazing. My close, lifelong friends are my “sisters”. The leadership skills that you learn such as running meetings, managing budgets, public speaking, organizational skills, and being able to motivate others are just a few that help you in so many aspects of your life. Also, the resources you can get from alumni will help you network when it’s time to find that JOB!
This week was a GREAT week to showcase the positive aspects of being Greek and build both competition and community. As the administrative assistant in Campus Life and Greek Council Advisor, I am proud of all their hard work. I think they have started a new tradition here at IU Southeast!
