A Place to Belong - 10/24/2008

The semester is half over and students are starting to change gears after mid-terms, becoming more deliberate about school work and settling into routines.  The first six weeks traditionally are utilized for students to transition into the rigors of higher ed.  Joining new clubs, getting to know new people, and learning from new professors helps pull students deeper into their educational journey.

I hear students express that they have met friendly people and made a ton of friends.  Students tell me they are benefiting from the small class sizes and from the encouraging, supportive professors and staff.  They like the individual attention that they receive at IU Southeast and the opportunity to be independent.  Other students are encouraged about school once they feel their educational and career goals have been validated.

If you have felt like you don’t belong, don’t worry.  This is not the time to quit.  It is an opportunity for you to grow as a person.  I have met students who said that they find they need to be more assertive in making friends and more intentional about attending social opportunities.

Residential students told me they appreciate more opportunities to get involved and to be engaged with campus life.  Some students identified the need to get more organized in balancing work and school.  Trust me, you are extraordinary if you are balancing a 30- to 40-hour work week and a full-time student schedule!  Know your limits and take care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally so that you have the strength to achieve your goals.

Other students say they have enjoyed having more control over their class schedule than in high school.  Staff in academic resources, academic advising, mentoring, financial aid counseling, personal counseling, and other areas has been invaluable in keeping students focused on their success and helping students finish strong.  We believe in you and want to help you find what you need.

Here at IU Southeast, we do have professors who know your name and want to help you.  We have the resources to provide you with the complete college experience.  And we want to see you succeed in becoming who you were meant to be.  If you have not attended a campus event, come by the Campus Life office to hear about the line-up of Halloween activities, student organization parties, or the upcoming stress-free zone activities.

For those who want to do more, sign up for our GOLD or legacy leadership development programs.  Don’t forget to vote and get involved in discussions concerning social issues.  Stay in touch with our changing world because you will be better prepared to make a difference if you do.  Get advised about your schedule for the spring semester and visit with an instructor to make sure you are on the right track.  People are friendly year round at IU Southeast.  Come say “hey” and let us know how you are doing.
