Description of Chemistry Major
Chemistry majors are as varied as the many areas the subject encompasses, and yet they have many of the same characteristics. By its very nature, chemistry attracts curious and imaginative individuals who are interested in learning more about the world around them and in solving problems by rational thinking.The IU Southeast School of Natural Sciences offers the following degree programs:
BA Chemistry and Biology
Double Major in Biology and Chemistry
This program is recommended for pre-professional students such as pre-medical and pre-dental students who have a strong interest in both biology and chemistry.
BS Chemistry
This degree and its biochemistry track, discussed as follows, are certified by the American Chemical Society. This program is designed for students interested in a strong and comprehensive preparation in chemistry and other related sciences. This degree is especially recommended for students who plan to pursue graduate studies in chemical sciences, including analytical, biological, inorganic, organic, medicinal, pharmaceutical, polymer, and physical chemistry, as well as those who are interested in pursuing further studies in chemical engineering. Students completing this program will receive a certificate from the American Chemical Society.
BS Chemistry - Biochemistry track
This track is especially recommended for students who are interested in pursuing graduate degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology; Ph.D.-M.D. degrees; or professional studies in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other allied medical fields.
BA Chemistry - Business Management Track
The BA degree track in business management program is recommended for students who plan to pursue careers in industry, government, law, sales, or other areas where business and administrative skills could enhance success in the field. It could also provide the basis for further studies in either the field of chemistry or business. Graduates of this program will have a seamless transition in the business of science and will have completed the required courses for entry into the MBA program.
BA Chemistry - Biochemistry Track
The BA degree track in biochemistry is recommended for those students wanting to go on to medical, dental and other health-related pre-professional occupations, and those interested in working in chemical industries with emphasis in biotechnology and pharmaceutics, which would require a strong background in biochemistry.
BA Chemistry
Upon completion of the requisite courses for a BA degree in chemistry, the chemistry major will have laboratory knowledge and hands-on skills to become self confident and competent, be able to keep legible and complete experimental records, and be able to search for and communicate chemical information in both written and oral forms. Upon graduation, the chemistry graduate will be competitive in the job market and be prepared for, and successful in admittance to graduate/professional schools.
