Description of Religious Studies Major

Philosophy is the study of difficult but important and penetrating questions about the meaning of life and death, as well as attempts to answer those questions.

Philosophers search into the meaning of human existence. They question basic beliefs, values, assumptions and prejudices. They inquire into the nature of knowledge, beauty, language, science, religion and government. Philosophy works to improve thinking skills in such basic areas as reasoning, analysis, criticism, synthesis, and evaluation.

Majoring in philosophy offers a student the opportunity to gain skills in critical thinking, writing, and reading not afforded by many other disciplines. These are vital skills if one is to succeed in a rapidly changing work world. For those students who intend to pursue an advanced professional degree (for example, in medicine or law), the philosophy major provides the analytic training and intellectual studies that make for a well-rounded, qualified, and attractive candidate.
