Spring (Junior year)

  • Research areas of interest, careers, institutions, and programs.
  • Speak to advisors about program and application requirements.
  • Register and prepare for appropriate graduate admission tests.
  • Consider taking a preparation course of the graduate entrance exam (GREGMATLSATetc.)

Summer (Before Senior year)

  • Take graduate admissions test (GREGMATLSATetc.)
  • Check on application deadlines and requirements.
  • Visit schools of interest (speak with faculty members and students in your program of interest.)
  • Complete your applications and personal statements (The personal statement is where you can explain why you are applying to graduate school, what interests you about this program, and what your future goals are.)

Fall (Senior year)

  • Obtain letters of recommendation from professors or professionals.
  • Mail your complete application packet (including tests scores, transcripts, and letters of recommendation.)
  • Contact Financial Aid Office to find out about FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms and deadlines. Deadline usually March 1st.
  • Research and apply for Graduate Assistantships (GA), Teacher Assistant (TA), and Fellowship positions at your institution of interest.

Spring (Senior year)

  • Contact graduate institutions to make sure they have received your complete application packet.
  • Visit institutions that accept you.
  • Chose the program you wish to attend and send a letter of acceptance.
  • Send letter to schools to which you were accepted to but have chosen not to attend explaining that you will not be attending that institution.
  • Send thank you notes to individuals who have helped you through the graduate school application process. (individuals who wrote letters of recommendations for you)
