Major: Marketing and International Business
Class of 2013
Brown-Forman, Louisville, KY
Digital Marketing Legal Compliance Specialist
Please describe your current job. What is a typical day like?
Brown-Forman owns over 25 wine and spirit brands, most of which are global brands. My role as a Digital Compliance Specialist is to ensure that all of Brown-Forman's digital marketing efforts follow all of the guidelines for responsible marketing. This includes, but is not limited to, reviewing digital marketing campaigns for all of BF's brands across all markets globally. Every campaign must follow all of the country's laws, platform policies, and Brown-Forman's own Responsible Marketing Guidelines. Every day I work with a wide range of digital marketing campaigns to ensure the campaign is compliant. Because of that, not one day is the same as the other. I really enjoy that aspect of my job.
How or when did you get your current job? What have you learned?
I began networking for a job with this company about a year and a half before I graduated. I was able to obtain an internship with Brown-Forman the summer before my senior year. I took this opportunity to kick my networking efforts to the next level. Once my internship ended, I made it a priority to stay in touch with key individuals. Once I graduated, I began to send out emails, ask people from the company out to lunch, and connect via LinkedIn with as many people from Brown-Forman as I could. Eventually, a position that matched my qualifications and goals became available, I applied for it, let my contacts know I had applied, and here we are.
Is your current position where you want to be on your career path? Where do you see yourself in the next year? Five years?
I feel that this position is exactly where I want to be in my career path. This position will lay the foundation for where I want to go professionally. Eventually, I want to steer into Brand Management. From there, I'd like to move into Multicultural Marketing. After that, I will look to acquire a Chief Marketing Officer position, which I am hoping leads to a position as CEO.
Did your internship prepare you for your current position?

My internships did an incredible job preparing for my position. I would not be here had it not been for the experience and knowledge I gained through my internships.

What are some of the highlights and challenges you experienced while you were a student at IU Southeast?
Getting involved with the IU Southeast Marketing Club was one of the best decisions I made while at IU Southeast. The leadership experience and the relationships I made are irreplaceable. Also, receiving the Outstanding Marketing Student Award my senior year was pretty cool, too.
What advice do you have for other students while attending college?
Get an internship and network like crazy. Read books on how to effectively network. Trust me, they work.
Did the Career Development Center help you with your search for a job or internship?
Definitely. All the hard work that people like Rosie and Trey put in to assist me is a big reason of why I am where I am.
What advice do you have for other students who are looking for a job or internship?

Just do it. It will help you tremendously.
