Why Study Transition to Teaching?

The IU Southeast School of Education has developed a “fast-track” Transition to Teaching teacher certification program structured for those already holding a bachelor’s degree. Interested persons who meet state requirement will be eligible, upon completion of program, to earn their teaching license in Elementary Education. The Transition program parallels the regular Elementary Education Program offered by the School of Education. The Transition to Teaching program does not currently offer a program for Secondary Education.

What is Transition to Teaching?

The Transition to Teaching program was enacted by the Indiana General Assembly in July 2002. (See Senate Bill 0166 and IPSB Rule 6.) The purpose of the program is the recruitment, retention and training of competent professionals who did not major in the field of education to now become certified to teach education in schools. Persons holding a bachelor's (or higher) degree are eligible for an Indiana teaching license through the satisfactory completion of a Transition to Teaching program.

Eligible candidates must:

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university with overall grade-point-average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree with a 2.5 GPA (based on a 4.0 scale) and five(5) years’ related professional experience

Admission Requirements

All applications for Elementary Transition to Teaching Program must be received by the School of Education at IU Southeast by 4:00 pm on November 1.

  • Attend a mandatory program advising session.
