There are two distinct cumulative calculations on your academic record (official transcript).
Program statistics are used at IU Southeast for all GPA-related and accrued credit decision points (graduation GPA and credit hours, probation and suspension. Dean's Lists and Chancellor's Lists, academic bankruptcy.) Program statistics includes all courses a student has completed. However, if a student repeats a course (through enrollment, testing, or transfer credit), only the course with the best grade will be figured into the student's program statistics (the best attempt is counted for credit and GPA). All schools at IU Southeast use the Best GPA repeat policy (except GRADUATE BUSINESS). Both the IU and program statistics:
Note: other schools on other campuses may not use the Best GPA repeat policy in determining the program statistics. It is important to remember that if you transfer to another IU campus, the schools/divisions have the option of determining how to handle repeated courses in one of the following five ways:
Hours passed is the number of IU course hours completed with a passing grade (A+ through D-, S, P) at the level indicated (Undergraduate, Graduate, or Cumulative). Any hours earned as a transfer student from outside the IU system are recorded on the transcript as Transfer Hours. IU hours passed and transfer hours are added together to determine your class standing.
The grade point average is reported in two ways:
As the semester gpa is the calculation of all grades received in a single semester.
As the cumulative gpa is the calculation of all grades received while an undergraduate or a graduate student at the university.
If the student enrolled at more than one IU campus during an academic career, the cumulative GPA would reflect the student's Indiana University GPA, and not separate it by campus. Separate GPAs are calculated for undergraduate work and for graduate work, so if student pursued both an undergraduate degree and a graduate degree at IU, the GPA's would be calculated separately and both appear on the transcript.
Only courses with grades of A+ through D- and F are used in calculating a Grade Point Average (GPA). P and S grades are passing grades in completed courses, but are not used in calculation of a GPA. Courses taken at other non-IU institutions are not used in calculating the IU GPA.
A student's grade point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the sum of all grade points earned by the sum of all credit hours attempted. Note that only Indiana University course, regardless of the campus where they were taken, are counted in the GPA. To calculate grade points, multiply the credit hours for each course by the numerical equivalent of the grade. The numerical equivalencies of letter grades are:
