Tobacco Free Policy to Take Effect at IU Southeast on Aug. 1.

In order to foster a safe and healthy learning environment, IU Southeast is proud to announce that we are going tobacco free effective Aug. 1, 2007. This is in accordance with a campus-wide mandate from former Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert.

IU Southeast will join IUPUI and IU East in becoming a tobacco free campus. Herbert stated in February that all IU campuses will be tobacco free by the end of 2007.

Under the new policy, the use or sale of tobacco products is prohibited on university-owned, operated or leased property or vehicles at any time. Smoking in personal vehicles, however, is allowed. The policy extends to all university property, including the Paul W. Ogle Cultural and Community Center and all campus sports facilities.

Enforcement of the policy will be handled through the existing processes in place at the University. Current students, faculty, and staff have been advised of the new policy.

“It is our goal to preserve the freedom of all members of the IU Southeast family who choose to smoke, while protecting the rights of non-smokers who wish to enjoy our campus without being affected by second-hand smoke,” said Chancellor Sandra R. Patterson-Randles.

In an effort to maintain the health and well-being of the entire campus, smoking cessation programs will be offered to everyone at little or no cost to participants. Continuation of the cessation programs will be evaluated annually by the University to determine if the programs should be continued based on interest and participation.

Residence Hall Construction Starts at IU Southeast

NEW ALBANY, IN, (July 23, 2007) – Indiana University Southeast is moving forward with a $20.7 million project to add on-campus housing.

Construction has begun on five residence halls for the IU Southeast campus. The project is expected to be complete for the fall 2008 semester and will house more than 400 students.

There are several changes already evident on campus, including the removal of trees by the IU Southeast lake. The removal is necessary to create a strong foundation for the lodge-style buildings, but the empty space is only temporary.

The campus will maintain its scenic atmosphere and picturesque views as more than 200 new trees are planted around the residence halls. Additional landscaping is planned for the area as construction is completed.

For the latest information on housing at IU Southeast, visit the housing Web site at www.ius.edu/housing.

The addition of on-campus housing – a first for IU Southeast – is the beginning of a new era for the University. When the project is complete, IU Southeast will be the first full-service public institution in the southeast sector of the state.

The construction of the residence halls is happening at the same time as the upgrades to University Center. That project is the University’s largest renovation to date and is scheduled to be finished by summer 2008. It will include a new Student Involvement Center, improved dining facilities and a new commons area.
