The first chapter of the IU Southeast First Year Seminar
textbook discusses various ways that college is more
challenging than high school. Consider how these
challenges can be multiplied when a student who has a
learning disability enrolls in college. Because learning
disabilities such as dyslexia and dysgraphia are invisible
disabilities, teachers, classmates and roommates may
misunderstand the steps a student with a learning disability
follows to master material for a class.
Professors, even with notification from the Coordinator of
Disabilities, may not be aware of ways they can prepare and
present materials to help accommodate a student who has a
learning disability.
