We have completed a busy fall 2013
semester. A number of diversity-related
panels, workshops, and events have been
on the campus schedule, and the Reduce
Bias in Language poster promotion has
been rolled out. On October 12, 2013,
IU Southeast hosted the Diversity and
Inclusivity Teaching and Research
Symposium as part of a symposium

rotation with Ball State University and Indiana State University. One
hundred people from five different states registered for the symposium.
Twenty-one presentations were included in four sessions. During lunch,
two representatives fromWalden Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky,
shared information about the development and implementation of their
Connecting Cultures project. Walden Theatre used roleplaying to foster
understanding between ESL students and the regular student population
at Shawnee High School. This culminated in a theatre production
which conveyed how a bridge was built between two diverse groups of
students. This issue of Transformations contains a photo gallery from the
symposium. My thanks go to Randy Hunt, a member of the IU Southeast
Diversity Council, who served as our photographer, as well as to other
Diversity Council members who served as volunteers.
The focus for this issue of Transformations is on learning disabilities.
I hope that the articles will lead readers to a more robust understanding
of learning disabilities as viewed from three different perspectives. You
will learn more about the Coordinator of Disability Services, Matthew
Springer, and how his own experiences as a person with dyslexia
have directed his career path. You will meet three students, each with
a different learning disability, and discover how standard classroom
practices can aid or deter the learning process for a student with a
learning disability. Finally, you will be given some suggestions for
adapting classroom practices to better serve students who have learning
disabilities.
