IU Southeast Diversity Academy

The IU Southeast Diversity Academy is a self-sustaining enterprise housed by Continuing Studies and supported by other academic units. It provides education, training, and professional development opportunities to meet diverse needs in virtually any career and any aspect of life. Initially, the Diversity Academy consists of a program in languages, a program in culture and life style, and a proposed diversity leadership program.

Program in Languages

The Program in Languages, also known as the American Language Academy (ALA) at IU Southeast, was created to meet the needs of international students, immigrants, and groups with special needs, as well as community business entities engaged in global economy. Course offerings include foreign languages, English as a Second Language (ESL), TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) preparation*, American Sign Language (ASL), and other curricula based on expressed needs.

* IU Southeast’s Student Development Center (SDC) has applied to become a TOEFL testing center, which will complement Continuing Studies’ instructional services. For additional information on TOEFL testing, contact Doug Denton, Coordinator of the Student Development Center, at (812) 941-2309.

Program in Culture and Life Style

The Program in Culture and Life Style includes courses previously offered under the heading of Mind, Body, Sprit, which range from world culture, religion to alternative medicine. Expression of needs and interests in new course offerings is welcomed.

Postdoctoral Diversity Fellows Program

Indiana University Southeast has developed a comprehensive Diversity Plan for the campus, which includes the creation of two Diversity Fellow positions funded by the President’s University Diversity Initiative.

Fellows will participate in a highly individualized postdoctoral training program, teach courses, and conduct research. They will contribute to diverse faculty recruitment, to the improvement of similar programs throughout IU, to the promotion of diversity in teaching and learning via an exemplary Diversity Academy, and to partnership building and community engagement with the building of a regional resource center for diversity leadership.

Diversity Leadership Program

The Diversity Leadership Program (DLP) is proposed to provide campus leaders as well as employers/employees in business, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies with formal professional development opportunities and credentials. It would also provide a national forum for diversity in higher education, nonprofit undertaking and business/industry. The DLP would offer courses of general interest as well as programs designed to meet special needs. Courses could be held on the IU Southeast campus or at various off-campus locations, or via distance learning options. Curriculum would cover diversity management, equity and compliance issues, and include such foundation courses as Human Biodiversity, Psychological Diversity, Sociocultural Diversity, and Similarity/Unity in Diversity.
