Diversity Assessment

IU Southeast sent a group of faculty and staff to this year’s Enhancing Minority Attainment (EMA) Conference held at IU Kokomo on November 9, 2006, which focused on “Designing and Implementing Diversity Assessment Plans.”

Here is the timeline for the project:

  • February 2007 – March 2007: Conduct site visits (IU Southeast is paired with IU South Bend for peer reviews)
  • February 16, 2007: IU South Bend self study report is due to IU Southeast team
  • March 2: IU Southeast report is due to IU South Bend team
  • March 9: IU South Bend will host a site visit from IU Southeast
  • March 23: IU Southeast will host a site visit from IU South Bend
  • Early April 2007: Prepare brief final summary report and a presentation for the April 2007 EMA meeting.

Diversity assessment will be conducted on four dimensions:

  1. Institutional Leadership and Commitment
  2. Curricular and Co-Curricular Transformation
  3. Campus Climate
  4. Representational Diversity

According to the template for assembling the Campus Diversity Portfolio, there are 6-9 standard questions with space for locally added questions as well as summary on both strengths and challenges.

One of the keys to success in this screening process is to select brief, relevant, and representative materials for the portfolio. This portfolio will consist of recent information detailing the mission of the document . The entire campus is invited to participate in this meaningful project.

This assignment is perfectly timed to start our campus-wide preparation for the next NCA reaccredidation visit with a focus on diversity. We shall use all communication channels to inform and invite campus members to participate because campus engagement as a process of continuous improvement is important. The Diversity Council is now up and running and the coordinators are in place. We will be organizing various action teams to undertake and promote our diversity initiatives. An immediate step will be to expand our diversity assessment task force based on the group assembled for the EMA.
