Reading Teacher License

 Graduate Study: Reading License (Addition)

Candidates must hold a valid elementary, junior high/middle school, or secondary license. This program requires 24 credit hours, listed below. Check with a licensing advisor to verify in which grades you would be certified to teach reading.

Attendance at a group advising session is required. Check the School of Education website for the advising session schedules--http://www.ius.edu/education/GradEdAdvise.cfm#121. More details and necessary forms will be provided at the advising session.

Applying to the Reading Teacher License Program:  

  1. Attend an Advising Session https://www.ius.edu/education/Events.cfm.
  2. Submit a completed paper Reading License Application Form distibuted at the advising session, either at the end of the advising session or mailed to the address below.
  3. Complete the online Application:  https://onestart.iu.edu/sisad-prd/p/Guest.do?methodToCall=start&inst=IUSEA&career=GRAD In the Personal Statement area of the online application, upload a brief statement that includes teaching experience and why you are interested in the Reading License.
  4. Submit one letter of reference from a school authority who knows your capabilities regarding literacy.  Use the Recommendation Tab on the online application to submit electronically.  If desired, letter may be mailed directly to Records Specialist at the address below.  
  5. Submission of application requires $35 application fee. Please note that persons who have previously paid an application fee for an IU Southeast graduate program need not pay another application fee. Should one wish to investigate whether this applies to her/him, please contact our School’s Records Specialist, Mary Ann Wild at mwild@ius.edu or 812/941.2388.
  6. Submit a copy of your current teaching license.  A scanned copy of the license will be accepted if applicant prefers to email it directly to the Records Specialist. If current copy of license is on file with the School of Education, you do not need to re-submit another copy.
  7. Submit transcripts from all colleges attended (unnecessary for any IU coursework) to the address provided below. Legible, unofficial copies are adequate.  Submit official transcripts for course work applicable to the program. If transcripts are currently on file in the School of Education, you do not need to re-submit them.  Required: 3.0 GPA for graduate work (if no graduate work has been attempted, a 2.5 undergraduate GPA is required).

For candidates admitted after 7/15/2011 who do not earn credit for course work at IU Southeast during any one-year period will be required to meet new requirements in effect when they resume their course work at IU Southeast. Candidates with a two-year gap in coursework must meet with an advisor and reapply for admission. 


Most candidates take two to three years to complete the coursework for this license. Be advised that several classes for this license are only offered during summer sessions.

 

 COURSES (24 credit hours):                     

1)    *EDUC-L 545**/E 545**, Advanced Study of Teaching Reading in Elementary School                                                                                                 
          (To be taken in the first 6 hours of the Reading License program, preferably first.)
                                                                                                                                                                          
2)    EDUC-L 559, Trade Books and the Elementary Classroom (Undergraduate course does NOT fulfill requirement)
             OR
        EDUC-L 535, Adolescent Literature
  
3)    EDUC-L 549**/E 549**, Advanced Study of Teaching Language Arts in Elem School      
            OR      
        EDUC-S 516, Advanced Study of Secondary School English Language Arts
                                                                                                             
4)   *EDUC-X 504, Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties in the Classroom (Must have taken E545 or S514 prior to enrolling in this course)

5)    EDUC-K 590, Special Topics: Methods of High Incidence (Prerequisite: K205 or K505 within the last 10 years, or current classroom experience
              with special education). With approval, another graduate level special education course may apply. (Submit a petition.)

6)    *EDUC-E 514/L 520, ESL/EFL:  Approaches to Instruction and Assessment (course number may change). This is an ENL course with a literacy focus; other ENL courses may be taken as electives. 

7)     One of the following: 

  • EDUC-S 514, Advanced Study Teaching Reading in Secondary School
  • EDUC-E 514, Newspaper in Education
  • EDUC-E 514, Engaging Children and Families in Literacy
  • EDUC-E 515, Workshop in Elementary Reading
  • EDUC-E 518,  Integrating the Arts in Language Arts
  • EDUC-W 553, Gifted and Talented (NOT same as W 551, Educ. & Psych. of Gifted & Talented)           
  • Approved Graduate-level writing course (See coordinator/advisor for approval)
  • Voyager class fulfilled in your classroom
  • Approved Graduate-level ENL/ESL course (See coordinator/advisor for approval)            
  • Other approved literacy-related course (See coordinator/advisor for approval) (Credits from Reading Recovery, Indiana/Kentucky Writing Project, etc. fit this category.  You must submit an official transcript showing graduate credit hours from an accredited institution to fulfill the requirement. If you have these specific credits showing on your graduate transcript, there is no need to file a petition. If asking for approval for other classes, file a petition form with documentation of course description, course curricula, and transcript. 8)     *EDUC-X 525, Practicum in Reading (To be taken at the end of the program; a 3.0 GPA for Reading Program coursework is required. Apply for practicum at least 6 months prior to registering.) 

*Several of the literacy courses have assessment assignments/writing requirements for the program embedded in the course syllabi. Therefore, if petitioning to get credit for a course with an embedded assessment requirement, the candidate must submit the assessment piece(s) to meet the license requirements. This holds true for transfer credits, as well. Courses that possess an assessment assignment/writing requirement are noted above with an asterisk*. Contact the coordinator, for details.            

** E 545 (or L 545) and E 549 (or L 549) may not be taken during the same semester.

ALSO NOTE: Some of these courses may require permission to enroll, indicated by “PERM” in the Schedule of Classes. Contact Dr Susan Ridout (sridout@ius.edu) for permission. Always provide your student ID # with any request. Candidates formally admitted to the Reading Teacher License Program will get early announcements of course numbers. After a short time, some classes will open to others on campus, so sign up for classes ASAP. Make sure Dr. Ridout has your current e-mail address.
