Sensitivity Awareness


Diversity sensitivity towards differences in cultures and individuals is not an easy process. Many times our ethnocentric way of thinking impedes our ability to understand and respect another’s way of thinking. This inability, lack of desire, or lack of awareness to the importance of understanding diversity can create many problems such as:

  • The development of sterotypes and prejudices.
  • Charges of sexual harassment and discrimination.
  • Conflict between groups or individuals that thwart a team efficiency and productivity.
  • Impedes effective communication.

Diversity is not new. However, the sensitivity towards diversity is. As technology brings the people of our world closer and closer together, the need for sensitivity towards diversity increases. Diversity sensitivity is not a perfect tool. There are no absolute answers, no one right way. Just as the only constant is change, the only constant in diversity is differences. The only thing we can do, is try to respect these differences.
