Effective for students who enter IU Southeast in Fall 2007, and after

The following describes the general education requirements for all IU Southeast baccalaureate degrees for students who enter the university in the Fall, 2007, and after. However, students who entered the university between Fall, 2005, and Summer, 2007, have the option to use the requirements below, with the approval of their academic advisor and unit head. Care should be taken to document approval for students who change to the new requirements.

The list of approved courses from which students must choose for each requirement is the list of courses for that requirement found under "Approved General Education Courses" at this website.

1. Written Communication.
   
   Students are required to take ENG-W 131 Elementary Composition. (Honors program students may take HON-H 103 to meet this requirement.) Students are also required to take one course, selected on the basis of their major, from the list of second-level approved courses. Students should consult with their advisor to determine which second course is appropriate for their intended major.
   
   
2. Oral Communication.
   
   Students are required to take SPCH-S 121 Public Speaking. (Honors program students may take HON-H 104 to meet this requirement.)
   
   
3. Quantitative Reasoning.
   
   Students are required to choose one course from the list of approved courses.
   
   
4. Reasoning about ethical questions.
   
   Students are required to take one course from the list of approved courses.
   
   
5. Critical Thinking.
   
   Students are required to take one course from the list of approved courses. These courses will also meet one or more of the other general education requirements, e.g., Central Ideas, Issues, and Methods of Inquiry.
   
   
6. Diversity.
   
   Students are required to take one course from the list of approved courses.
   
   
7. Central Ideas, Issues and Methods of Inquiry.
   
   
   1. Students are required to take one course in the Humanities and one course in the Arts from the list of approved courses in those disciplines.
   2. Students are required to take two courses from different disciplines from the list of approved courses in the Natural Sciences. One course must include a laboratory component.
   3. Students are required to take two courses from different disciplines from the list of approved courses in the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
