Free H1N1 vaccine available to IU Southeast students, faculty, and staff

The Floyd County Health Department announced late Wednesday that it would provide free H1N1 (swine flu) vaccines for Indiana University Southeast students, faculty, and staff.

The free H1N1 flu vaccines will be provided during a vaccination clinic next week on campus.

Vaccines will be available from noon to 4 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 7 and Tuesday, Dec. 8 in University Center North, room 127.

Due to a limited supply of vaccines, shots are only being offered to IU Southeast students, faculty, and staff. Family members of students, faculty, and staff are not eligible to receive the vaccine. The shots are free of charge and no appointment is necessary. Students, faculty and staff must show their University ID (U Card) to receive the vaccine.

Indiana health officials announced last week that they would direct more swine flu vaccine to colleges in the state to help prevent or reduce another swine flu outbreak. This is the first time H1N1 vaccines have been available at IU Southeast.

IU Southeast H1N1 Response

Indiana University Southeast, like all IU campuses, is monitoring the H1N1 influenza as college campuses across the country see increases in the number of reported cases.

IU Southeast is concerned about the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff.  While the virus causes relatively mild illness in most people who become infected, if you believe you are experiencing symptoms consistent with the flu, you should stay home and minimize contact with other people. We urge those who experience flu-like symptoms to immediately visit their primary care provider or an immediate care center for evaluation.

With expectations that the virus will be more widespread than last spring, IU Southeast is reminding the campus community to take appropriate precautions to combat influenza.

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective in preventing germs.
  • Get the seasonal flu shot.
  • Avoid close contact with those who have flu-like symptoms.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to limit the spread of germs.
  • Don’t share food, drink, or utensils.
  • Stay home when you are sick.

IU Southeast has placed hand sanitizer dispensers and posters with prevention suggestions from the Center for Disease Control across campus.  We will keep you informed of additional information about H1N1 influenza as it becomes available.

Detailed information about H1N1 flu and IU’s response to the situation can be found at http://www.indianauniversity.info/.

With basic prevention efforts and constant awareness, we can all help the IU Southeast community stay healthy.
