This is a great day for the state of Indiana, a great day for New Albany and especially for IU Southeast. IU Southeast is more than a community college. It signifies our communities support and interest in promoting higher education and today will go down in history as we break ground for the first on-campus student residence halls. When the halls are open, IU Southeast will be the only four year public institution in Southeastern Indiana with on-campus housing. There's none elsewhere folks. (Applause)
[Adam Herbert]
This housing complex will make a significant difference in the life of IU Southeast. It will promote the educational, the social and the leadership skills of our students. It will pave the way for expanded enrollment. It will improve retention and graduation rates. It will provide students with a more complete collegiate experience. It will also enable IU Southeast to build a larger and a more cohesive community of learning.
[Sandra Patterson-Randles]
Our proposal is grounded in two major goals. First, we believe student housing will help us steadily increase enrollment by allowing us to be more attractive to potential students in a highly competitive market and to serve this regions educational needs much more successfully. Second, the basic design employs a lodge concept and situates the buildings close to the core of the campus so as to foster student interaction and a real sense of community.
[Ruth Garvey-Nix]
The notion of community as the cornerstone to living on campus at IU Southeast is supported by several building blocks including the lodge concept, which you've heard a bit about, the location, the context for educational success and student-centered staff and programs.
[Stephen Taksar]
These residence halls will enhance services on campus for all students, including commuter students. Serving a residential population will transform the campus in many ways including increased service hours, more student programming, enhanced outdoor spaces and an improved array of dining options for everyone.
[Edward Jerdonek]
So as you can see, many groups and individuals converged to meet the challenge of bringing student housing to Indiana University Southeast. Today is just the beginning. The students, university and region will be harvesting the seeds that you've all helped to sow for many decades to come.
[Ruth Garvey-Nix]
With a sense of community as our cornerstone and the building blocks to support that vision, next fall, students will begin to further their sense of belonging here and will start to call this campus their home. Again, we are very excited about this project and thank you for sharing in the transformation of Indiana University Southeast. Thank you.
